I saw Battles again this last thurs. (2nd time in a week) and Stanier has proven once again that he is a damn fine drummer. All hail John Stanier.

Susie Ibarra with the David S Ware Quartet at the RFH. The time he (Ware) came out on stage a giant dress made out of tinfoil.

Mac from Jesus Lizard is one of the most CREATIVE drummers ever. I mean, given that the guy has chops and stamina that are unequaled, but he was also WRITING CIRCLES around 95% of the drummers I have ever seen.

As a drummer, I look for taste and creativity to trump technique and chops any day, but Mac had it all. See also: James Lo. Genius.

I would rather listen to someone type a term paper than have to endure a Neil Peart drum solo.

Underrated guys you've probably never heard of:
Kyle Spence from a band called the Martians was an amazing drummer, but he had the personality of a billygoat. Never was sure if it was just me or everybody. Great player, though.

Curtis Crowe from Pylon was a powerhouse who nailed that whole Gang of Four dancepunk thing to the wall. He was also the cofounder of the famous 40 Watt Club.

There's a guy named Jeremy Wheatley who plays for the Low Lows- he's got the most musical touch on the kit... really something to see.

I used to love to watch Jodi from Portland band Hazel play and sing her Exene Cervenka harmonies at the same time. Beat that!

I see that Jerry Fuchs is getting some love here. He's the bedrock that Maserati rests on. Phenomenal. Our bands played together last New Years Eve.

Oh... also, speaking of Gang of Four, Hugo Burnham is the punk Charlie Watts- taste, discretion and power and a fucking AMAZING guy.

The guy from Louisville band Rodin once told me I was the greatest rock drummer he had ever seen after our bands played together in North Hampton, MA. He was young, then, and that was a long time ago...
