Super noob Reaper question:
Plugins are cheap for the holidays so I downloaded a few I used all the time in Pro Tools to minimize what all I’m relearning in my switch to Reaper.

Initially when I inserted an FX plugin the list in Reaper would show a ton, and even all versions (AU, VST3, etc) of the UA bundle I just added a few days ago. I added UAs 1176 today and now all I see are the UA plugins and only the VST3 versions. Did UAs management app delete all the Reaper plugins? What am I doing wrong here? It could be also related to selecting the interface when Reaper starts up, which I hadn’t done until today also.

You aren't filtering by VST3s only, are you? Make sure you click on "All Plugins" on the left side of the FX window.


The other option is that Reaper somehow lost the link to your VST paths(s). Double check the "VST" section in Options/Preferences...

Nate or Greg or any other EEs - it might be good to get official ruling on the question about speaker jacks posed up thread as there does seem to be some contradictory examples.

I'm not in any way an expert here I've always understood that the power going to speakers is DC and safer than AC (see Edison frying an elephant 120 years ago like an unconscionable toad) and have been drunk and punk enough to stupidly but still accidentally touch live banana plugs trying to troubleshoot a dodgy PA at a basement show a time or two w/ no effect on my person. This is what leads me to think that the industrial controls, 24V at 4A are AC power, but I don't actually know w/ any educated certainty.

The incident about the AC plug and the toddler is just luck - the contact points are pretty deeply embedded in most wall recepts so pulling it out enough to get even a small finger on it usually breaks the connection for cases like this. Plus there's the additional point that only one of the two (or 3 if grounded) is hot and cause a bite.

The story did bring back one of my earliest memories of sticking my finger in a live light socket though. Yes, it explains a lot arf, arf, arf.

Amplified audio, by definition, is AC. DC would be 0 Hz.

The thing about audio is that it's very dynamic. A 100 W amp is probably putting out only 100 W maybe 1% of the time, depending on how loud you have it.

Could you feel it? Probably, if your fingers are wet, which is likely the case if you happen to be a babby or toddler, and if you're listening to something loud and happen to bridge the connection. At that point though, your wet fingers are lowering the load impedance enough that any modern amp would go into some sort of protection mode, because it would look like a short circuit.

In summary, if you're concerned about it, it's probably best to cover the terminals, if only for peace-of-mind.

But where do we stand on licking 9v batteries to see if they're good?

The overwhelming urge to lick a 9v is a natural human act.

Thanks! It turns out I am just a major dummy. My initial thought was the window somehow got resized and I wasn’t able to see the folders. So I resized the window in every dimension EXCEPT THAT STUPID MIDDLE BAR. Which, as it turns out was hiding the folders. The UAD plugins were simply the only VST3 plugins (VST3 folder was selected). This is evidently the dumb stuff I will be overlooking when going from PT8 to Reaper 7 BUT also moving from Snow Leopard to Sonoma all at once.

Most of the time, I am going to need to a little bit more than that as far as exactly where I stand goes.

I was summing some acoustic guitar tracks with outboard via ReaInsert in Reaper last night. The latency was perfect on playback, but there was a significant delay on the recorded channel… sound familiar to anybody?

Totally guessing, but I'd try the "ping detect" thing on Reinsert if you haven't already, and/or right click on the record button and select 'preserve PDC delayed monitoring in recorded items".
