The biggest issue that I see is that performance when clocked externally is quite dependent on the quality of the PLL design in the original device. If the original device had a shoddy clock to begin with, it is likely the PLL is as bad or worse!

I agree that this external clock thing is huge marketing hype.

I also think that, for better or worse, these jitter changes are mostly going to be inconsequential. Not that they won't be noticeable; just not the difference between a good recording and a bad one.

Absolutely. We run our stuff clocked externally simply because of the multiple-chassis-clocked-together requirement. I didn't think the difference was noticeable, but it certainly wasn't better.

The moral of the story is, however, that buying a $400, $1000, or $1700 external clock in the hopes that it will turn your M-Audio box into a Prism is a joke. (Yes, I'm exaggerating, but y'all get the point.)
