I've heard In The West, Blueblood and Firewater. I listened and listened to them trying to get it. I never did. Sorry. I love Tmidgett's bass playing (and I can't think of another EA dude I enjoy his posts as much as..), but the band as a whole just never did it for me. I can hear some Pavement in there, and some heaping of Classic rock in the guitar playing, and that 's OK, it just never struck me as that interesting. I think that Joel Phelps singing and playing added this kind of nimble and delicate edge that I did like too, but I only heard one album with him on it. I also never jelled with the "late night at the bar staring at my beer" angle of many of the songs. Maybe this was just an observation from a few listens, but that's my 2 cents.

Maybe in light of the overwhelming positivity expressed by the EA masses I will give it another listen...

I have never "got" their records either, and I have tried, several times, since hearing them on the John Peel show years ago.

BUT, that crazy live video clip someone posted ages ago shot from inside the drumkit or something was very NOT CRAP.

That will do me.

Silkworm - Not Crap.

Pretty well single-handedly changed the way I thought about music ten years ago. I'm also amazed how well it holds up over time, compared to other bands of the same time.

My english is sometimes "direct" due to some lack of vocabulary.
My apologies.
But still happy to pay tribute to this great band

I'd recommend checking out Libertine, Lifestyle, Italian Platinum, and/or Developer next. I tend to return to Libertine more than In the West, and I found the late-period SKWM (Lifestyle up through It'll Be Cool) to be unstoppable live and on record. Admittedly there are individual songs that don't quite latch all the time for me, but the discography has more home runs than strikes.

I checked out the MP3 posted. The loudness and clarity really jumps out at you. Some powerhouse drumming, almost violent.

I wonder why I never heard of them before?

Michael was an astonishingly powerful and brutal, yet tasteful drummer. If you're not familiar with his history, the obituary Tim wrote is a warm look at the man, and has some background on his drumming, too. Go to http://silkworm.net/ then scroll down and click on "Next" or "2."
