FYI: I saw both of these in the past week.

Avoid "Open Water" it is utter boring crap. Really could have been done better. Probably would have made a more enjoyable "Made for TV Movie."

The Village, as per this thread, wasn't scary, but I did dig it quite a bit and Bryce Dallas Howard is a lovely woman as well as a really great actor.

This one's tough. I'm temped to gush about the scariest and many other lists related to the horror genre, as it is my favorite category of movie.
I know I will forget many, but;
The Shining (Scared the shit out of me when I was 12)
The Blair Witch Project (The Woods at night-standard fear of mine)
Jaws (scared me when I was 7, and instilled terrible fear of any body of water)
Nightmare on Elm Street
The Serpent and the Rainbow (Both before Wes Craven began to suck)
Rosemary's Baby
The Exorcist (Still works well for me)
The Eyes Without a Face (Extremely Creepy)
Diabolique (Not the remake, but the original. More specifically, two moments in the movie that really killed me.)
The Ring (I avoided it forever, then I gave in, and it scared me well)
Altered States/The Devils/The Lair of the White Worm (3 Ken Russell movies where his hippy-ass acid flashback imagery overcame crappy dialogue, and got to me.) Also, noteably, all three movies have nuns being raped by Roman warriors with large satyr-like cocks.
Night of the Living Dead
28 Days Later (This had several great moments, but overall I wouldn't call it one of the scariest movies)
City Of the Dead -Gates of Hell(I thought it was great, which is heavily debateable, as I am well aware.) Some over the top gore as well.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre ( The original, of course. But, I did like the remake as well)
The Thing(John Carpenter's remake)
Halloween
Ok, this could go on, and I have forgotten many. I agree with many of the choices I have read, but in terms of scariest, that can be very personal.

last house on dead end street is tremendous.

i also recommend anything from the japanese guinea pig series, specifically devil's experiment, flower of flesh and blood, and he never dies. great, great stuff.

I must say that both the Shining and the Exorcist are as relavent today as they were when they were made. Talk about two great movies.

The Shining: I think in the DVD extras they talked about how the steady cam had just become available to the industry, so Kubrick, being the freaking genius that he is, found the absolute perfect application for it with Danny and his big wheel (yeah I know it's not a true BIG Wheel). When he turns that corner, the scene we've all seen a million times, still gives me nightmares. Sometimes I'll be somewhere alone, like at work when no one is there, and I'll scare myself thinking those twins will be waiting for me as I make my next turn. I don't think anyone has used the steadicam to that effect since.

The Exorcist: That movie is great on so many levels. Perfect. Another movie that scared the pants off me as a kid, and still today. It really couldn't be made any better (I'm speaking of the original version). I have this condition called "night terrors" that's afflicted me since childhood. It's a state of conciousnees somewhere between being awake and being asleep, yet I'm completely paralyzed and defensless. When I slip into this state, I have an overwhelming wave of fear course through my body and a sense that there is a presence in the room with me. This presence usually takes the form of the posessed Regan. She's usually sitting at the foot of the bed and quietly laughing at me. The whole time I'm going through this my wife is laying next to me sound asleep. Damn you William Friedkin.

The good news is, this almost never happens to me anymore.

One more I haven't mentioned yet:
Sleepaway Camp. Saw it when I was in fourth grade. Terrible movie, but that's the great thing about it. It's so bad it's disarming and laughable, until the end...total jaw dropper. Highly recommended.

Horror movies almost never scare me.
The same with thrillers.
This on the other hand I find very frightening.

And this. Just read the plot line on this one and tell me you're not shitting your pants in fear.
