I think the closest store to me that actually sells vinyl, used or otherwise, is nearly a two hour drive. I buy almost all of my music online.

What about all the new new post-prog-punk-rock & roll? You know, the edgy technical stuff?

I buy almost everything through the two independent record stores in my town. I actually have a little scheme worked out where I order shit from the one store, which is generally more *cough* AoR/dad rock oriented, and I just pick stuff from the bins at the other one, which is all about the beautiful punk/noiserock. Both stores are run by good friends who always have time for some coffee and are always willing to sell whatever stuff I have "out" for no charge at all.
Even though I can save time/money by ordering my discs on the internet, I would be seriously bummed to see these places go because everybody started doing just that.

I know the Other Music folks very well, worked with one of the founders at Schoolkids in Ann Arbor, MI. I have bought tons of stuff from them. But NYC is just too goddam far away. It would cost me too much in time, energy, gas, tolls, etc. Philly is closer.
I do like PREX, but dammit if they don't dissapoint me everytime I go in there. And they totally have that NYC "i am superior to you" clerk vibe down.

my local shop didn't have the EIG vinyl or cd which I was kind of surprised and saddened by, but they want to sell records so they were happy to order it for me. local record shops i'm sure are being ass raped by downloading, if I ran a shop i would be very appreciative of a customer who wanted to purchase several albums a month and I would order anything i could for them.

I bought it local. The only time I shop online is usually through eBay.
On the upside, due to the threat of the internet, the lazy grumpy record store employee is surely on the endangered species list. Customer service means everything now.

well, i ordered EIG (LP) two weeks ago and still not in yet. my local shop usually has new releases. they ordered some and ran out. that was three weeks ago. they said they don't order "from that distributor" very often. i know that's a bullshit response for "we fucked up." but the thing is I've phoned twice now and been told that it would be in "next week."
i've had it. i'm going online for this one.

From my personal experience, Princeton is probably the best record store Ive ever had the experience of dealing with. At least for vinyl. Their cd selection kinda blows. I can totally understand them not having EIG in stock. It just happens and the people that work there are kind of in their own universe.
But i would never speak ill of that place. Of my 700+lps, ive probably bought close to half there and I will continue to do so in the future. GOd its been too long since ive been there. Where else can u get copies of Chavez-Ride the Fader and Calexico-The Black Light for 4.99 each in the same visit? Or the Monkees album Head for 4.99? I could make a list at least 50-100 deep of insane deals i got there. Hell my friend got the Vrrrssson album (which is the yume bitsu guy) for 2.99 new and it was a limited edition lp. Their prices on lps are phenominal. The only stuff that is overpriced is the original older vinyl. They had a copy of the Amon Duul II album Wolf City for like 40 bucks for the longest time. I got it for 12 on ebay.
Seriously, if I loved close to that store, i would go every week to go through the new releases bin. I miss it so bad, its been almost a year since ive been there. Stupid ex hated me going record shopping. Now im free to piss away my money on vinyl, woohoo!!
