He gets a pass for Valley Girl, Birdy (which is an amazing film), Racing with the Moon (with Sean Penn) and Leaving Las Vegas. Also the aformentioned good ones like Adaptation.
Good actor with interesting quirks, just went for the Hollywood brass ring and is surprisingly dull and listless in these big budget movies. Very odd... he is a money making machine, maybe that is why.

NOT CRAP. He has some solid performances under his belt. They are numerically outweighed by all those unbelievably shitty movies, but I think he's the real deal.
