Talent is a weird thing. It isn't really ever the artist him/herself that counts, it's the inspiration behind it - and it comes and goes. I wrote somewhere else on the board that there are no geniuses (except maybe for, like, Leonardo Da Vinci), only genius works, and I really believe that. If you have a good run of inspiration, maybe you'll have a lot of genius works -- you'd be really lucky.
It's always been odd, to me, that people can set them up as "entertainers" as an occupation. If you're a craftsman, or play an instrument, or whatever, then it makes sense, but to hold people up to the expectation that they consistently put out good work isn't fair. The best albums come out when the artist is inspired

Take heart that you're not Stephen Malkmus, googling his own name.

You're not alone. After being pretty disappointed in post-Pavement Malkmus, this album is pretty darn good. I think the song "Out of Reaches" is a incredible POP song. Great chorus hook.

Eh, I liked Face The Truth when it came out and also sorta like the new one. But you're right, the style is a bit different than Pavement. No classics, just a bunch of kinda catchy songs.

Who isn't surprised that any of his solo releases are getting the thumbs down from those who never "got" Pavement in the first place? His ability to write good songs is intact, this many years into his career. As far as lyrics go, he can sing it in Farsi for all I listen to lyrics. I think it's a great album from start to finish.
