bfields wrote:Does anybody remember "The Goats"? They were a Rap act that kinda dissolved in the mid 90's. They had a great song called "Not Your Typical American" that has an excellent bass intro. If you like references to Bush Sr., David Duke, and "Jack in the Box", then try to find their album "Tricks of the Shade". It's out of print, but you can download it somewhere.
Yeaaaaah!
I fucking remember them!!!
I saw them live once,a tiny club in Lausanne (La Dolce Vita),well, yeah,Switzerland has good venues and they're not made out of chocolate.
Anyway,The Goats were brilliant and still remember the bass player, tall, skinny, death metal haircut kinda guy.I still wonder what the fuck he was doing with them??

i had overlooked this for a while, i guess 'cuz it's a cover starting the album (and while a good cover, one that's greatly overshadowed by the beyond-amazing original...) but anyway:
The Sky's Gone Out: Bauhaus: "Third Uncle": David J
(originally on Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy) of course...though in the middle of the album...bass by Brian Turrington...one of the best goddamned songs ever...)

Cavern by Liquid Liquid (bass by richard mcguire)
ALSO used by Grandmaster Flash on White Lines. I hope Mcguire gets paid for all the play White Lines gets. That song wouldn't exist without that perfect minimalist bassline.
Other greats.
Gigantic by the Pixies (deal)
Stand By Me (I don't know who did this, but it is genious)
The Woman who was Also a Mongoose (dead milkmen Dave Blood) I love this song so much, and it just happens to open with a bassline.

Under Pressure (queen/bowie)
or Vanilla Ice Ice ice baby.
and
When I was a Painter (breeders) sort of like underpressure, but ... not.

I sort of forgot this was about ALBUM OPENING tracks.
So, how about
Sebadoh III , the freed pig. That starts with that genius Bassline that Ramps you right into an amazing record.
