"You Are My Sunshine"
Came here to post this.
"Harvest Moon" by Neil Young
The second verse of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" is up there for me, too.
I'm sensing a theme in the songs that tear my heart out — comes from a long life of loving one person and the family we've made together.

My initial answer was 'A Sadness Song' by Current 93, but after a brief reflection, the correct answer is 'Tecumseh Valley' by Townes Van Zandt. (Though 'St John the Gambler' comes very, very close.)
'Tecumseh Valley' is a devastating song.

On that front, I think if you're in the right/wrong frame of mind, then The End of the World is in the running. Also sounds amazing.
Love this song. And my opinion was probably colored by the Cocaine & Rhinestones episode about the Nashville Sound, but I like Brenda Lee’s version even more.

We need to curate playlists on some sort of accessible platform. YouTube might have the most of these?
I personally find a lot of Leonard Cohen both really sad but also funny, which is sorta how I do sad in real life so that makes sense.

Lots of Richard & Linda Thompson songs I could choose from but this one takes it for me:

There's a reason no one wants to go beneath the stairs at Gypsy Sally's.

This and Nothin’ (mentioned earlier) are both great. I usually think of “Marie” when I think of his saddest songs, but admittedly it’s in some ways a bleaker version of “Tecumseh Valley”.
