I was looking up hybrid mixer setups and some guy recommended using a live sound mixer’s bus outs into a nicer summing mixer for sort of a fake master section upgrade for mixing. A console cheat, if you will.

I like the idea but I’m not really going to mess with all that. What are the chances it would actually work as intended, ie - an economical and tactile control layout with an improved sound? Or with the live sound desk at that stage still be doing its thing?

I’m sure its splitting hairs to a certain extent either way, but I’m wondering how much the master section of a mixer has to do with whatever sound its imparts vs the earlier stages.

The master section of my Allen heath is definitely colorful, but so are the group buss. A signal out of a direct out, a group out, and the master bus do sound a little different. Not sure bypassing the master and using some other summing mixer would be worth it. If I were to do something like that I'd want something like the 32ch heritage summer with groups and I'd come out of channel direct outs into it. Seems like a way to use a sidecar that doesn't have master section to mix.

I bought an electret stereo mic for a friend’s birthday. It was cheap and nothing too fancy, but it’s never been used and dates from 1980!
It runs off of a 1.5V battery. Should I be worried that unintentionally applied phantom power could damage the mic? It came with a 2 jack connectors cable but I replaced those with XLR connectors.

What is the name of that horn thing that comes on in stereotyped Africa-sounding music on TV? You know, tooooot, and then nanana lalala, you know?

Generically, you're probably thinking of a "flute;" but obviously Africa is huge and diverse and there a lot of different kinds of flutes from different parts of the continent with different names and different tunings etc etc.

Is it worth giving a shit about XLR quality for AES/EBU connections? I haven't done much with digital xlr and I'd rather use my neutrik connectors for analog connections if they won't make a significant difference for the digital stuff.

Connectors shouldn't matter too much for AES/EBU. Cable characteristic impedance is much more important. You want 110 ohm cable for this.

For really short runs I've never been picky, but yeah generally I'd try to get a genuine 110 ohm cable for anything over 15 to 20 feet. All of ours are orange so we can tell them apart from regular mic cable.
