Old ideas like what? Being a good band?

like rewriting the same song over and over.

which fugazi wasn't above doing.

Later TJL suffered from this like the herpes, Fugazi might have had a two day bout.

um...nah. i don't recall any retreads in the last two albums of anything from any of the first four albums. examples?

I've really enjoyed reading this thread. This has been one of the few ones where nitpicking at another's post has led to insights. (And the fantastic Grace Kelly comment by Big Dave - thanks for that.)

The Jesus Lizard for me, by a long way. I like Fugazi, but have never loved them. I saw the Lizard around the time of Down and have never seen a more powerful band. I've seen some very weird bands, and I've seen some very forceful bands, but I've never seen a band that can be so weird and so violent as the Jesus Lizard.

Also, someone here made a point a while back about being impressed by how heavy a band they were whilst not having a traditionally heavy guitar sound. In a band of fascinating musicans, Duane Dennison's playing fascinates me the most.

I feel obliged to have a little stab at nitpicking:-

Get dog costumes wrote:But this lyrics issue? Seriously? The Jesus Lizard's lyrics are mostly stupid, save the occasional cool concept like "Lady Shoes." I wouldn't change a word of them, and they're sung just as they should be, but I can't think of one thing David Yow sang that carries much weight without him wailing it and those three guys playing along. This is true of almost all rock lyrics. Fugazi can be exception to this rule, producing something that is worth reading on a sheet of paper.

Fugazi lyrics don't do much for me. David Yow's a poet, I think. With economical use of words, he conjures up the strangest and weirdest images and situations. That you can barely make them out is no bad thing: occasionally, a line jumps out coherant and startle me. Their records are a rare example of ones with lyric sheets that I've spent some time reading.

For some reason I can't take Fugazi albums and listen over and over... and the few songs that bore me *really* bore me... (to be fair, I have not checked out every one of their albums from end-to-end yet)

With the Jesus Lizard - I could hear them on repeat all day and just be perfectly happy - also no songs I can think of that I dislike enough to skip over... and I definitely had intense desire to hunt down every album/track and drink them all in.

So, there's my vote for the Jesus Lizard (but still with much respect for Fugazi)

I feel like the Jesus Lizard is finally starting to wear Fugazi down here, just as it should be.

Could it be the birth of yet another hilarious message board personality? A wacky guy who's called "kayak" and just posts pictures of kayaks! just what we needed round here!

"lady shoes" was just two "jokes" sang back to back. the yahoo group has an mp3 of yow telling these jokes while the band tunes up or resolves some gear issue.

fugazi's lyrics could be sharp social commentary, or weird melancholic wailings, but pale in comparison to TJL's strange moods and images. which are oddly enough, perfect matches for some of the cover art. specifically the bucknall paintings and the ones done by yow.

EDIT: and the next person to mention the tie, or the right side winning, i'll go and vote with my other names.

the Jesus Lizard, hands down, no contest. Fugazi were a great band, but they've become boring for me. More than half of the time they come up when my IPOD is on shuffle mode, I skip the song. I almost never press skip on a tJL song. Maybe it's just me, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
