I also saw a great show of Picasso's photography, where he was painting with lightbulbs.

Actually the photograph was taken by Gjon Mili.

My friend Alec does some extrordinary work (especially if you see the actual photographs, since they're produced with a large-format camera). That's Jim Harrison there. The blog on his site is good reading.

I also like what Anton Corbjin does with celebrity photography, as far as creating a unfamiliar way of seeing very familiar people.

i recently saw the arbus exhibit in minneapolis and was COMPLETELY blown away by it. i have to say that it was probably the best museum/gallery/opening show i have ever seen (and i go to quite a few in nyc). i've always been a huge fan of hers but to see such a collection was really powerful. it blew cindy sherman's last show to fuckin' smithereens.

I'm a big fan of Paul Shambroom's photos.

I concur on the greatness of Alec Soth.

Elliott Erwitt is another great photographer. Like Alec Soth, I know alot of his work can be found on the Magnum site.

Henri Cartier-Bresson is truly great. Obviously.

I should mention that Amy Arbus has some really damned impressive work, herself.

A lot of those look severely messed with (digitally). Are they? Some almost look like the backgrounds are matte paintings. Sometimes the people look either photoshopped in or like cardboard cutouts. The portraits and especially the Meetings series.

I really like that Shambroom Meetings series - again, esepcially seeing the actual prints.
