Pavement on the Terror Twilight tour, which wasn't surprising as the record sucked.

Spoon was extrememly fucking boring.

Urge Overkill the first time I saw them. The second time was better, but I was also drunker.

Pavement - too boring
Fugazi and Afgan Wigs - too loud
Guided by Voices - too drunk

it is remarkable how much the place of a show affects the impression. i have seen bands just kill it at house shows and then a night later play at club of 150 people and it doesn't even compare.

the worst is when bands are playing at a club of 650 people a year later and the show just pales in comparison to when you saw them do there thing in a small room to 40 people a year earlier and it was amazing and only costed $5. i worked at a small club for years and saw most of the music i am interested in live and had some real amazing moments and some real let downs, it is always crap to discover someone you respect musically treats you like crap because of something like towels or not having 9volt batteries. my favorite scenario that happened once in a while was, "oh this is it? i guess it will be an intement show...(referring to the club is 150 person capacity and they are never going to get all of their raging fans in the door or the guitarists backline for that matter) and 2 people show up and pay for the show. i always loved it when this did not happen.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE on tour with mum a few years back were a bit painful to sit thru for an opening act. PINBACK took a long time before the singing was warmed up so that was a bit of a bummer and a bore. I have to say LUNGFISH live is definitely an acquired taste. And I've always wanted to see BAD RELIGION with the ooh's and aah's, but Greg's typically the only one singing (Recipe for Hate era).

I can say that every band I have ever been in, despite the best intentions, has always fallen short of the bringing it definition. I am sure I am not the only one.

The other night I saw Front 242. I only liked them for about a month when I was in high school 12 years ago, but a friend really wanted to see them so I went. I kept wanting it to end but they just kept playing. Despite all the powerbooks, cough inducing smoke machines and 150dB kick drum samples, it was really boring.

The two bands that opened for them were really bad. Gray Matter (supposedly from chicago) was so bad it was offensive. The other band was so bad I felt sorry for them so I won't mention their name.

Very agreed. I saw them as a 3-piece. I expect they may have actually "brought it" back in the day when they could focus on doing their thing, as opposed to filling the void.

I dont have to speculate; I saw them both as a four-piece and a three-piece, numerous times. They were enormously better as a three-piece -- better material, more energetic shows, just better. They didnt bring "it" every time I saw them, but they "brought" "it" more often than they didnt.

Black Cat main stage w/ Black Eyes, and Fort Reno, the show they played with the super-short-skirt girls.

Both shows were very "meh" for me. I like their older stuff, with the guitar interplay *and* basslines. Live, the two-guitar stuff was alright but sorely lacking in, um, bass. And then when it was one guitar and one bass, I was left missing the guitar interplay, and not so much liking the way they played bass.

I totally defer to your judgement about whether they were better as a 3 or 4 piece. If they're better as a 3-piece, then I can only imagine how little I would've liked them as a 4-piece. I would've expected that the guitar interplay plus bass would've made me like the 4-piece more. But if they were worse that way, then I just don't know.

Hey, what do I know? I was also underwhelmed by Fugazi the last time I saw them (Fort Reno).
