It would be, which is not to say that I wouldn't do it. I haven't, but I have replied as follows: "Of course we didn't do anything. When you're absent, we just don't know what to do with ourselves. We spent the entire class speculating on what you were doing."

Just look shocked and then extremely sympathetic while shaking your head. Then turn away quietly with a sad look of pity. A second later, turn back around and say "let's discuss this after class." After class, when he comes up to you, say: "No, you didn't miss anything."
