How about if your band's name is on a shirt for, like, a musical festival you played? Can you wear that, or is that also douche behavior?

Hypothetically.

Not a shirt, but sometime in 1979 I bought a "badge" at Wax Trax that was black with a red "USSA" on it.

That became the name of the band Flour and I had in college. I wore that badge all the time.

I think wearing any band t-shirt (whether you are in the band or not) is kind of juvenile. If you are under 25, it's not crap, but after that age, it becomes a bit pathetic.

The last t-shirt I bought was a Yes "Relayer" t-shirt, but I have never worn it. I dig the Roger Dean artwork. I don't think I ever will wear it. Who will it impress? If anything, it will just make people think I am a bigger nerd than I am...

The most pathetic thing is going to art/progressive rock festivals. All of those obese fans are all wearing xxx-tra large band t-shirts. So on top of being extra large (which is obvious), some need to make the statement that they are also Jethro Tull fans. I think they are just scared of women and wish to keep them at bay.

That's one good thing about independent rock fans. Most of them don't wear band t-shirts.

Wearing your own band t-shirt, even if you are under 25, is crap!

Let me get this straight: you are saying that you like how a t-shirt looks, but won't wear it cause it wont impress anybody? If you pick your garb based on what other people are going to think of you, you are wearing it for the wrong reasons. Wear whatever the fuck you like and forget about what other people think. Do you think your band's t-shirts are cool? Do you like your own band? I hope so. There is no reason you can't wear your own band's t-shirts, or any other t-shirt that tickles your fancy.

Well, I did say impress, but I'm thinking more that wearing a Yes t-shirt is entirely irrelevant because it invokes the notion that "This shit head likes 'Owner of a Lonely Heart'", which to me is not really a Yessong, but more of a Trevor Rabin song.

Unfortnately, this is true. When I mention I like Genesis, people think "uh, you mean "invisible touch" and stuff. Yes (no matter how prog they have been in the past 10 years) have the same effect. No amount of convincing people that these bands once (and in the case of Yes still do) produce(d) spellbinding music will change the damage that the 80's has done.

That said, I'm sure you don a burlap sack, because you are a true existentialist that doesn't care what anyone thinks. The funny thing is, most people I have experienced who say this are the most self-concious buggers on the planet when the chips are down...

So when you go to a bar trying to meet women, you don't brush your teeth and you wear a burlap sack because you don't really care what people think? This stinks of bullshit to me... Your photo sort of seems to prove this too. You look like 50% of the people at a rock club these days (or 80% of male Whole Foods employees), with the grubby post-grunge beard and premeditated-messy hair. Maybe you do it because you like it, but I suspect you like it because it is a contemporary style that impresses women...

So, yes, I have worn it once and I had a lot of explaining to do, which I shouldn't. The Yes shirt belongs in the closet, along with any mention of the fact that I admire this band immensely (other than in online forums). When it comes down to it, very few people understand why Close to the Edge, Relayer, and Tales of Topographic Oceans, and Going for the One are Yessongs, and "Owner of a Stinky Fart" is a Trevor Rabin thing. I mean the band didn't have Steve Howe or Rick Wakeman at that point, and Trevor Rabin seemed to have dominated the song-writing process.

OK... no one cares about Yes except Kerble, who appearantly has all of the Steve Howe solo albums. Impressive. I only have one Jon Anderson solo album...

oh Yut, you are so quick! so quick to judge!

I dont wear a burlap sack because that would not be comfortable. I don't try to pick up girls because I've been with the same one for over 5 years. I DO care about what I wear! I have t-shirts that I like and I wear them. I buy t-shirts cause I think they look cool. I have a collection of clothes that fit me, and won't fall apart. I like Carhart pants. They will last me a lifetime. I have lots of band t-shirts, all of bands that I like, and all that fit me nicely. I have a beard. I like my beard! It has nothing to do with any of this "post-grunge, pre-meditaded messy hair" bologna that you are spouting off about. My dad has the beard, and the same hair. He's 73, post revolutionary Russia. I have the social life of a recluse spider. I work between 60-80 hrs a week, and the only people I see during the week are my bandmates for practice and bands at the studio. Sometimes my boss comes to visit me in my dungeon at the day job. In fact, could stand to care a bit more about how I look.

I'm not saying "I don't give a shit what people think so I'm going to wear a burlap bag". That would still be caring about what other people think. I just wear what's comfortable, what fits and what I like. I find that purposefully not wearing somethign that YOU like because of what other people might think is doing yourself a diservice. I mean, you bought the damn t-shirt cause you liked it, so whay the hell won't you wear it? Why?

btw, I love me some Genesis.
