Weight and size are critical. She is a person of smallness.

I just wanted to say, if you go down the rabbit hole of trying to find a traditional speaker for your amp, most of the mid 60s DRs people love came with an Oxford 12K5. The 70s Oxfords don't sound quite as good, but they're decent if they haven't been beaten to death. A 12L6 would be a wattage upgrade, so consider those are well. Here's some info on Oxford speakers that came in Fenders:

K = 25 watts, L = 30 watts, M = 40 watts, and T = 45 watts (12" speaker) or 60 watts (15" speaker). It is important to note that these are peak power ratings, not RMS power. The RMS rating is more realistic and is usually about half of the peak rating so use that as a rough guide. The earlier numbers in the alphabet wouldn't be appropriate for the wattage of your amp.

You should be able to find one of these for under $50 as well. For instance, there's a 12J4 on Chicago craigslist for $35 right now, but that's probably a bit too under powered for your amp or I'd link to it.

Hey man, I really appreciate all this info! It's exactly what I needed. That Peavey tip was gold and it has greatly expanded my options and reduced my price point. There's a local dude selling a NIB 1979 Peavey branded CTS. He said it's the exact speaker that Fender was putting it's Special Design label on that year. So, that would be totally perfect for my 78 Deluxe. It's also 25 bucks. Just waiting for him to call back.

On the subject of testing the speakers with a meter first; you're totally right. I'm always double checking everything at this point, the last thing I want to do is fuck up an OT by making a stupid mistake. That's good advice for anyone to hear who is swapping around used speakers.

Well, the craigslist guy with the Peavey branded CTS never got back to me, but I ended up getting a 1975 12L6 at the music go round in Kenosha for $20. It has a tiny tear in the cone, which will be an easy fix. Hoping to get it fixed and installed this week. Also need to do a general check up of the DR; pull the chassis to re-tension the power and rectifier tube sockets, just a general inspection and cleaning, etc. It has an interesting mismatch of preamp tubes that I need to do some testing and swapping of as well. I'm excited to put the Oxford in there. The Vintage 30 sounds so throaty and...I don't know...forced? And the presence/upper highs are really harsh. This amp is plenty loud, I don't need a speaker that gooses any more out of it.

I'll update later in a different thread when I've got everything sorted. Thanks again for your help, Tommy.

Some of the newer fender solid state amps are SO loud and SO light.
You can't go wrong.

Late to the party, but yes to the above! I have had a Fender Champion XL 50 for a year or so now, which is comically light, does a good Fender clean sound (well, a couple of good Fender clean sounds) and is pretty loud. I got it cos my back is fucked, and because my Laney LC30 is pretty loud at its lowest level, and I'm really happy. I haven't had the chance to play it with a band yet, but it's loud enough for "bedroom" use on its lowest vol setting so I feel confident it has the power. The cabinet construction might limit it, but damn, it's light.

EDIT: it takes virtually all of the pedals I've tried it with pretty well, with only some higher gain things sounding a bit thin and fizzy - a Fat Sandwich and a Carcosa fuzz.

The onboard reverb is OK, plus it has trem and vibrato, though, frustratingly, you can't run them with the onboard reverb.

I got a used Yamaha Stage Custom drum set from Guitar Center. No cymbals or hardware, but a nice 22 kick drum, a 14 chrome Yamaha snare that sounds alright, 12 & 13 toms, and a nice heavy duty Yamaha stand. A little music store by me had some nice used Gibraltar hardware (bass pedal, hi-hat stand, throne, and a boom stand) I picked up.

Whoever had this kit before me had the 12 as the rack, and the 13 hung on the stand as a floating "floor tom".

Like so:

I felt this lacked thump and the degree of difference between 12 and 13 wasn't a ton even tuning the 13 lower. As luck would have it, a different little music store had a matching Yamaha Stage Custom Floor Tom for sale, but it was 18x16. The dude at the store was open and I traded a few old guitar pedals I wasn't using straight up for the drum.

Now I am working with 12, 13, 18, 22.

Does it make sense to set up this kit up without the 12 and do one up, one down with the 13 and 18, or keep everything and use it like this:

I could also set up as a traditional 5 piece with 12 and 13 on the rack and the 18 as the floor. Also, I hope I didnt shoot myself in the foot by not getting a 16.

First of all, that's a nice looking kit. Congratulations!

I think the answer is "if you like it, it's good." While not the ubiquitous 12/13/16 combo, it's not weird of wrong to go outside that range if it works for you. I guess the 12-13 difference is significantly less than the 13-18 difference, but it might be cool in context. You could also experiment with tuning and head selection if that 13 seems a little high pitched relative to the 18?

Anyone got a recommendation for a cloud music service?

Background: I've got a computer full of digital music that I want to be able to listen to on other devices (such as phone). There used to be a really rad Google cloud-based service (Google Music) that had an app that ran on one's computer and basically mirrored your local library on the cloud. So anywhere you are with a data connection, there is your full library. That service is now dead and i'm looking for a replacement. Ideally its something where I dont have to manually upload everything to a cloud server, and it just automatically syncs a library for me. Anybody have something specific they like? Was thinking about trying iBroadcast...
