Just got my ATM450s. I'm really happy with them. I've liked them on toms, bass amp (along with a dynamic for the low end) and Fender Rhodes amp.

ATM450s on bass amp? interesting. How loud is the bass amp you recorded? If these mics are really this versatile I'm getting more interested in them.Alternately the CAD M179 still seems like the better deal.

I'm hearing a lot of good talk about the AT 450s, I've never used them because I bought a really shitty Audio technica drum mic package and stayed away from the name ever since.(an ignorant choice on my part seeing as almost every company makes a shitty low grade budget package). So are they good budget mics or are they just all around kick ass mics? I mean I'm sure they sound good for the money which is always awesome, but do they sound good regardless of the price? And I'm talking a little more so in terms of overheads.Thanks,-Barrettand sorry for straying from the topic

The band were all set up in the main live room playing without headphones and the drums were played with hotrods or brushes so, no, it wasn't loud at all. The bass player brought his own early SWR head. The 450 in combination with an M380 actually sounded great. It was also very useful on the Rhodes. I always struggle getting definition and clarity from a Rhodes through an amp. The 450 helped a lot.I used them on toms again yesterday and didn't seem to need as much eq than with other condensers I've used.

Maybe if the kit is played with brushes and the skins are really worn...I do think they (ATM 450) are great mics, not just for the price.I've been using m160 as overheads lately...

I never used the AT450, but recently I had great results with AT4050s in figure 8 on toms after trying 414. The pattern was good for not capturing the nearby cymbals, and the sound was great too.

I just bought another pair. Waiting for them to arrive. In Europe you can get them for around 380 ‚¬. Great for guitar, horns, strings, vocals sometimes, accordion, glockenspiel...

CAD m179 if working on a shoestring, they can sound pretty good, particularly nice on lower toms. Higher racks would require a little more high end detail i feel.
