I've been summing through a mixer and definitely prefer it, but listening out of the console through speakers sounds so much better than listening to the console mix played back as a stereo file. Part of this is perception driven by volume. When you spread out tracks, or even a few stems across a board the headroom of your desk allows for a lot more power in your listening environment. The playback of a stereo mix down is limited by the headroom of the two channels you're playing it on. I suppose a way to either test this idea, or work around it if it's true is keep two settings on your control room volume knob, a lower one for summing, and a higher one for playing back your mix down.

I've been trying to spend more of my mix time with a lower over-all volume the majority of the time. I think when I'm mixing something big and energetic I tend to subconsciously get all of those "This rocks!" brain chemicals firing by steadily monitoring at higher levels throughout the session without noticing. At a quieter level my responses are almost more clinical, which is less fun, but more practical. We naturally think anything louder in the room sounds better.

The extra frustrating thing is thinking back on the handful of records I got to mix to 1/4" or 1/2" tape. They don't sound like the multitrack refs, except it was a cool thing then (especially 15ips 1/4" quantegy 456, which almost transported it back in time ). It was the step in the process going from a clinical listening experience to "ahh, we made a record!".

With digital yeah it's just kind of the same except not quite as good in a way that's hard to pinpoint. I've started using console strip, buss, and tape sim plugs by Air Windows that maybe kinda reduce this phenomenon but we'll see.

Yeah, that tape offers that subtle bit of compression. I can see why so many people have become addicted to the fancy hardware compressor on the master bus paradigm, though I haven't tried it before. I have an Otari 1/4" 2 track, and should totally try and mix down to it, now that you mention it.

Yeah, FM offal told me you posted here a little while back and I had no clue. I met you thru Leah and Lindsey when we were all still in high school!

It's not a robot, it's JANEWAY. She's quirky, but you'll get used to it.

My TEAC 15 console has stopped powering on suddenly. I've kept it powered on continuously, except for about a day where I shut it off to swap a noisy input module with one that'll be used less often. But I've been unable to get the board to power back up. The needles on the meters will jump for a split second when I turn the PSU back on, but the lamps/LEDs don't turn on anywhere, and it doesn't pass signal. I've checked connections and all, everything seems normal, but no luck.

My guess is that it's a fuse or something in the PSU, Occam's Razor. But I'm incompetent in DIY electronics (so a naturally good fit for console ownership).
This does seem like a PSU issue, right?
I have a tech I can bring the PSU to just on principle, but I'd love to hear other guesses/input in the meantime.
