The Beatles maybe?

So many great bands with insufferable hams for a frontperson.
I guess it depends on what you mean as "annoying" and also "lead singer". Annoying voice? Annoying personality? And also, do you just mean lead singer/person fronting a band and not also playing an instrument?

Any lead singer that has somewhat unique singing qualities is by nature pretty much guaranteed to annoy someone.

With respect to both voice and personality, Paul McCartney might be an example of someone less annoying, but he's also a multi-instrumentalist.

Just lead singer? I'd agree that is tough. Maybe Jon Bon Jovi??
I'm not thinking so much about how to define annoying, just making a broad observation.
Could be the singing, could be the personality, I dunno.

Robert Plant, Axl Rose, Jim Morrison, Morrissey, Anthony Kiedis, Bono, Mike Love, Anton Newcombe, Jeff Magnum, Billy Corgan, Thome Yorke, Julian Casablancas, Buzz Osborne, Mark Lanegan, David Lee Roth, Jello Biafra, Wayne Coyne...

All these singers belong to popular bands, and I feel like (with some exceptions I'm sure) most who enjoy said bands are looking past something annoying/problematic about the singer.
When people dislike these bands, the singer is often cited as the basis of that dislike.
DIY and die anyway.

I've made my love for Primus known here for quite some time. In addition to that, I'll add:
Jane's Addiction
The Doors
Red Hot Chili Peppers during the Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik era
Cream
The above are in spite of the annoying lead singer or shithead guitarist. The below are without waffles:
Soundgarden
Ska, for most of the first and second waves and a not insignificant amount of third wave
I can't remember if people here hate The Who? Anyway, The Who up through Who's Next
Pearl Jam for the first three albums
Animal Collective up through Feels

There's probably a few more that are taboo around here that I don't remember

Wow, I (at least) like a lot of that stuff, and wouldn't necessarily think of many as guilty pleasures. At a minimum, I'm pretty sure or at least hope that the prevailing opinion of The Who is generally favorable in these parts.

re: Primus, I mean, they of course outwardly claim to suck, and I find that by itself endearing. I often sing "Too Many Puppies" to my dog, and my wife and kids think I'm absolutely insane because they have no idea of the song and now when they play with the dog also say "Too Many Puppies!!"
I feel absolutely no guilt about any of these. The only music I feel any guilt about liking is the song "What's Up (What's Going On) by 4 Non-Blondes. And I guess the work of Amboy Dukes and the song "Stranglehold" while trying desperately to separate the art from the serial child rapist Ted Nugent.

I don't hate the Crash Test Dummies. I don't really listen to them, but I don't think they're as bad as people say they are. We live in a world where Areola Grande, Richard Benson, and TheoryofaNickelCreed exist.

Also, the time they performed Headline News with Weird Al was pretty great.

Crap, I dunno. I like Pearl Jam. I don't own any of their albums, but I'll listen to them.

I don't listen to Joe Bonermassa, and I can't imagine I ever will, but I respect the fact that he's the guitar nerd to end all guitar nerds and doesn't apologize for it or the fact that he likes cheap guitars as much as wingadinga holy grails.

How about guilty displeasures? Bands or acts you're supposed to like but have serious hang-ups on? Fleetwood Mac, and, by extension, Steve Nicks the solo artist (TM) is mine. I can't stand them. I especially fucking hate Edge of Seventeen. It's a gimmick song in the same ilk as the one where they clap and say "let's go" or the "nah nah nah hey hey good bye" song. Without the "HYURR! HYURRR! HYURRR!" gimmick, Edge of Seventeen is a boring pile of hot garbage and falls apart. I hate most, if not all, gimmick songs. If you're gonna basically write a new take on the O'Reilly jingle, just cover that and do the public a service by reminding them they probably need a new oil filter.

Chuck Berry. I have huge respect for him as a pioneer, innovator and performer, I'd love to meet him in rock Valhalla (Valhalen?) and shake his hand, and he's fun to listen to sometimes, but he literally has one song with 500 different sets of lyrics and titles.

Ariana Grande has at least one really good single ("No Tears Left to Cry"), which already puts her miles above those others.

I sense the need for a new thread! If no one has created one in a few days, I might consider doing it myself, but I feel that I might be spending a little too much time on PRF right now.
Oh shit, I just made it, and I swear I hadn't seen this. Great minds/synchronicity!
