Band: Don Caballero

I'll never forget hearing 'Lucky Father Brown' for the 1st time on John Peel's show-a total fluke as I rarely if ever listened to it. Imagine the sort of grey, dribbling indie piss ineffectuality which I was habitually exposed to at this time (actually, don't), this sounded like the work of gods by comparison, supermen, so intense and powerful was this music to my young ears. I missed the name of the band but by yet another fluke I happened to read a review of 'For Respect'- how many instrumental bands could there be? Bought it blind, a good choice. The album killed.
'Don Caballero 2' didn't so much raise as the bar as throw it straight up in the air-a total mindfuck, still sounds incredible to this day. 'What Burns...' seemed to magically appear at a time when fans such as myself thought that the band had split up, and had the most incredibly exciting opening of all time. Another incredible record, and a big shift in terms of overall mood and atmosphere, almost blindingly bright, which was a lot more than just tech flash.
Don Caballero without Mike Banfield turned out to be nothing like as good as Don Caballero with Mike Banfield. Don Caballero without Ian T Williams (even though Damon was a founder member) is like King Crimson without Robert Fripp-totally redundant and stupid beyond belief. Even before you take into consideration that the guitarists are playing absurd and embarrassing parodies of Ian T Williams guitar parts.
However, excepting WCLP which was FC, DC will always be NC.
