....they're totally heterosexual, and that sits well with me.

I think it's great that dudes can take off their shirts, wear tight black pants and cross swords with each other without any ridiculous claims of homoeroticism.

That's right, touch tips! Now you are one!

I mean, hey, there's a chick there!

American badasses.

When did Death ever have a chick in their lineup? And which one of the guys in that pic is Chuck? That really doesn't look right to me. This is more like it:

Death was a freakin great band. I think that Human is an album that every "aggressive"-type drummer should listen to. And probably every album after that, too. But especially that one. Probably my favorite work from Sean Reinert, who is one of my favorite drummers all-time.

Even with the rotating lineup with pretty much every album having an entirely new cast, Chuck always managed to keep Death sounding like Death. And he had some shred-tastic lead guitar players, pretty much all the time. If you're into that. Which I am.

Probably my favorite band ever to come out of Florida.

RIP, Chuck Schuldiner! One of the true masters of high-tech met-tal music.

PS - Be careful, Matthew. While Death was focused for years on spirituality and enlightenment, it was more via Eastern schools of thought. There is a clear anti-religious element to it, not that it's in any way pro-devil or any of that, but it is certainly not affirming of your faith. See?

Crystal Mountain

Built from blind faith
Passed down from self-induced fantasy
Turn a page to justify
Conjuring power - it opens wide
On seventh day,
is that how it's done?
Twisting your eyes to perceive
all that you want
To assume from ignorance
Inflicting wounds with your
cross-turned dagger

Inside crystal mountain
Evil takes its form
Inside crystal mountain
Commandments are reborn

All the traps are set to confine
All who get in the way of the divine
In sight and in mind of the hypocrite
A slave to the curse forever confined

Solo: Schuldiner

Shatter the myth
Don't cut yourself
On your words against
dreams made of steel
Stronger any faith
That inflicts pain and fear,
is that how it's done?
Twisting your eyes to perceive
all that you want
To assume from ignorance
Inflicting wounds with your
cross-turned dagger

Inside crystal mountain
Evil takes its form
Inside crystal mountain
Commandments are reborn

And hey, remember this album?

If you look close, you can see the dollar bills in his pocket. Remember when teevee evangelists held a lot of power in the US, before people caught on to what a load of shit they were as individuals? Metal had a field day with that in the late 80's!

This is the best I could find... a couple samples of some mad-skills drumming from Human. He doesn't really have a lot of room here to show his jazz side (like he does with his own band, Cynic) but Reinert definitely shines... and Schuldiner's guitar is quite dope, if you're into metal anyways.

This shit was pretty groundbreaking when it came out, 15 years ago.

I'm kinda bummed that all I can get is the beginnings of songs. Anyone familiar with death metal knows that songs usually have about 15 different parts in them, and the beginnings are just tiny pieces of interesting big pictures.

Seriously, what drummer has this guys mix of machine-like technical precision, creativity and finesse? And before you say it's all protools'd, firstly it was 1991, and secondly a good friend of mine (who was as big into zappa as he was jazz) saw Reinert play live back then and was blown away.
