4This is another poll that begs the question "did you need to ask?"
Of course it's CRAP. Anyone who actually likes music can't like MTV.
Plus, they don't play music, they play reality shows.
MTV2 started great. The first time I saw it, the Replacements' Bastards of Young was on. The original "anti-video."
They followed it with the Jayhawks, and then Golden Smog. I realized that without saying a word, they were doing a Minneapolis set.
So cool.
That lasted about a week.
Same with VH1 Classic. It started out great - lots of concets and live footage of bands I actually like. Seems like that good run's finishing up as well.

5Wanna hear how queer MTV is?
So I have a friend who is a pro wrestler, has been for years. He tells me that MTV is doing a wrestling show and he's agreed to wrestle on it.
Now, I say 'that's fucking gay I hope they are paying you well'
He says 'yeah it's fucking stupid but it's allright money'
I say 'I'll come to the taping of the show, I'll sit in the crowd when and where is it?'
He says 'get this dude, they told us that they don't want any ugly people in the audience they only want attractive people to be sitting in the crowd. You have to send a headshot and go to an audition just to sit in the crowd'

You think MTV is crap and you think television is crap in general?
That is unbelievably subversive and not at all obvious!

9i think the music video itself is generally a very low-level art form. there are exceptions to the rule, of course, but by and large music videos not only fail to be artistically interesting, they also fail to entertain.
a good song is a complete entity. it doesn't need supplemental nonsense tacked on in order for it to be worthwhile or have sufficient meaning. generally the best music videos are the ones that don't just pile information on top of information. like Bresson said, when the sound is doing everything, the image should be doing almost nothing, and vice versa. there needs to be a delicate balance between the two elements. if a song is totally rocking out, the visual accompanyment should be excercising some restraint -- as opposed to assaulting the senses or rendering the music redundant by overstating the obvious, which is how most music videos function.
by my personal standards, most videos they play on mtv are unwatchable, especially these days. (i wont even bother to get into the quality of the actual music.) but the funny thing is, with the exception of stuff like wondershow zen (which seems pretty entertaining, based on the clips i've watched), most of mtv is dominated by crappy tv shows, most of which have little to nothing to do with actual music (though all of them manage to thoughtlessly incorporate it somehow).
so in the end MTV is just an endless orgy of hyper-mediated nonsense. its almost flippantly conservative in its conception of youth culture.
seriously, watching MTV is like sucking the satan's cock.
CRAP, ZERO WAFFLES.
