Music You Think You Should Like But Don t

The 'Bands you know nothing about' thread reminded me of a new-ish topic. There are bands that people I trust keep telling me I would love, but every time I try, I find them uninteresting. I can't be the only one. For instance:

The Velvet Underground - recommended to me on at least six occasions, and each time I have dutifully "checked them out" and found them lacking. I want to like them, but I can't join the fun.

Guided By Voices - I don't get it. Friends whose tastes I share swear that this band is great. I keep thinking they are not. Then, someone else will tell me to try out such-and-such album. I do, and still do not like them.

I'm sure there are more, but I'll shut up for now.

That's funny, I was considering the same thing.

Put me down for those two, along with:

Stereolab, second half of 1990's forward
Pavement, esp Slanted & Enchanted
Prince Palace Bonnie Music Brothers Oldham
Bright Eyes (all)
Death Cab for Cutie
Smog
Cat Power
Wilco (excepting now with Kotchke and Nels Cline, maybe another chance)
Wu-Tang Clan
Modest Mouse
Microphones
Streets
Beck
The White Stroke Hive Vine Yeahs
Liars
Chicago "Garage" Pop-Rock (there are hundreds of these bands, it seems, but only a few engage me)
TV on the Radio
Young Marble Giants
Stephen Merrit output
King Kong
Norah Jones
"Electro-clash"
The Locust
Soul Asylum
Bob Mould electronica
electronica

That's all for now, off of the top of my head.
