Group: Bulgarian Women s Choir
4NOT CRAP - some of the most beautiful music in the world. Paul Simon should've made a record with this group, too.

5I will not voice crap. Bulgarian (or other Slavic? but specifically Bulgarian) Women's Vocal groups feature some of the most powerful, gripping displays of vocal prowess that I have heard. Not to be completely glib, but they are the equivalent of a Marshall stack on 10 in your favorite ampitheatre.
Anyone who is interested in voice as instrument, and has explored the spectrum encompassing jazz scatting, avant garde sound texture (read: Ono) and/or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan would do themselves a favor by checking out this musical phenomena.
Here is an excellent group out of CA: Kitka.
This is also a good collection.
Here is an excellent cross-pollination of Eastern Vocal Styles, featuring Huun Huur Tu (Tuvan throat singing) and Angelite (Woman's vocal group).
Huun Huur Tu are also high on the recommendation list for the same reasons, tho these gents play indigenous instruments of Tuva (Mongolia) whilst singing in THREE separate registers. That's one singer producing three pitches.
Absolutely transfixing live in concert.
I often pick one or the other to accompany flight take-offs and landings.
That, or Slayer.
Seriously.

6So absolutely not crap. That one record with the french title (les Mysteres de voixes Bulgares? Pardon my fake french, I should be using fake italian) on the Elektra/Nonesuch label is so beautiful it's like a miracle of nature or something. Almost-Grand Canyon, make-you-cry-beautiful.
