Entertainment Weekly has a regular feature where they ask various performers to name their 12 must have CD's (not recordings or albums, mind you, but specifically CD's). So, this week it's Andrew WK and goddamn if the man doesn't show some unbeknownst to me good taste. On his list are not one but two albums by To Live and Shave in L.A, a Terry Riley record, one album each by Napalm Death and Obituary, a Bootsy Collins anthology, Bach's Goldberg Variations, and an album by Ann Arbour's Couch. Overall, pretty impressive.

Have you by any chance seen the show on MTV called "Your Friend Andrew WK"? Granted, it's a total cheese-fest, but the gist is that he's a "Dear Abbey" or "Miss Manners" for todays slackers, and he actually comes off as a pretty nice guy. I saw it for the first time the other day and it made me want to buy the guy a beer. If only his music were good.

he seems to genuinely love what he's doing which is awesome. he's also from ann arbor/detroit and had an EP "girls own juice" on bulb records (wolf eyes and such) before any of his major label stuff - which always made me think there's a good deal of tongue firmly planeted in cheek in his act... if he'd been palling around with those guys back in the day, some of that attitude must have worn off on him - way to go AWK. http://www.bulbrecords.com

by the way, after checking that link - i see they have Todd on thier label - that band is awesome - i had no idea it was one of the dudes from hammerhead. anyone remember the dope guns video where hammerhead is playing and the drummer is wearing a colonel klink helmet? pricelessly retarded.

Its Craig Klause who was in the post Duh, the Big City Hammerhead, essentially for the tour after that record came out, he wasn't in the classic Hammerhead lineup as it were

He also put out a single called "Wolf Eyes Rocks". Dude's pretty aware of the underground noisy scene, but I think he tends not to acknowledge his past, for whatever reason.

I like his first album quite a bit, but think "The Wolf" is a totally pile. Not that "I Get Wet" is especially brilliant, but there's something just plain enjoyable about it for me. It's a 'pick me up' record.

I know he doesn't really seem to acknowledge his past musical endeavours, but I don't know how he could fit Wolf Eyes style noise into what he's doing at the moment, anyway.

I like to listen to about 15 minutes of his first records, once in a while. It's damn near impossible to listen to more than that, but while I listen to it I enjoy it. It's some pretty fun stuff, I mean, it's not a major artistic acheivement, but it's not bad.

my friends have discussed this before and I learned about this from them so if my facts are way off, I apologize.
as far as I understand
1- AWK was a prominent noise act on bulb records for like 10 years
2- he tried a social experiment by making industrial/pop songs about partying to see if the public would swallow.
3- is given "street cred" to some, while others just wanna get loaded and mosh
is any of this true?
any awk I have seen or heard has always been CRAP.
if #2 is true, I tip my hat, laugh and say CRAP
