Unofficial first record by Joy Division.

The one I'm talking about has the 5-song demo appended to it.

those songs are hard to listen to, for sure. but i don't think they're crap because they were the beginnings of something great.

I thought the Warsaw demos were done for RCA... Anyway, it's their best suff as far as I'm concerned. The best versions of each of those songs... my favorite being Novelty. Less cold production... more "heart".

It's The first stuff I ever heard by J.D... back around 1987-88 when I was in 6th grade (Thanks, Paul Mcafferey's brother Collin)

The first song I learned on guitar was "The Drawback".

These are two different things you are talking about. The RCA demo's ("The Drawback", "Interzone", "Shadowplay") are great, the Warsaw demo (back when the band was still called "Warsaw") much less so, but listening to them will probably make you appreciate the incredible development they made during the fall of 1977 (they changed drummers right after the recording of the demo). Their An ideal for Living (december 1977, which contains the song "Warsaw") is already an Herculean effort.

In general I like the cruder, non-album recordings of Joy Division (as documented on Still and Substance) better then anything they ever did with Hannett.

I seem to remember the recordings on disc three(?) of the Heart and Soul boxset being referenced as "the RCA demos." I don't have it handy right now, so I could be all wrong.

You also always see people saying that Joy Division were once called "Warsaw", but I've read interviews with Bernard Sumner saying they were never called Warsaw. I tend to believe him, seeing as how he was actually in the band and everything.

then this is the only joy division album that i enjoy.

i think it's pretty great. althought that les bains douches live album owns it in terms of "rockin-out-ness".

This is the one, but I think contractual difficulties also played a role in them pulling it.
