How could you even think of getting rid of Emo?

In order to decide this, we have to define either term.

If by Emo you mean -

Fugazi
Lungfish
Jawbox
Drive Like Jehu

And by Grunge you mean -

Pearl Jam
Alice in Chains
Soundgarden
Nirvana

Then colour me Emo.

I see emo as being roughly what grunge was, but more whiny. Grungers were moany cunts, while emo kids are moany cunts who probably still wet the bed.

Sentiment and lack of emo immersion pushes me towards grunge.

The massive A-Z of Grunge poster that my 15 year old self took from Melody Maker formed the basis of my early record purchases. In retrospect, its inclusion of Slint, Big Black, Come, Fugazi, Neil Young, the Stooges and the Velvet Underground seems somewhat desperate, but as I discovered such fantastic records through it, I feel there's a debt there.

Grunge is stupid and harmless, like all cock rock. It has its roots in actually MEANING something, which I sort of approve of, even though I find its extremes hilarious

Emo is snide and actually divisive. It has no message but total deconstructionist irony bullshit, which I find both offensive and, yes, sort of "harmful."

I go with grunge.

I can't think about Fugazi or Sunny Day Real Esate as emo bands. Maybe because they were actually good. Word "Emo" makes me think of all the current unbelievable rubbish bands. Grunge, easily.

If My Chemical Romance can honestly be called Emo, then I guess you have to include Nickelback as Grunge.

I can honestly call MCR "emo" cause I fucking hate this term as well as this band so it makes perfect sense to me.

Well, that's exactly the problem with these labels.

"Hipster", "Emo" and "Goth" just ends up meaning anything and everything you dislike bound in a neat little package for you to vent your own personal insecurities on. As a description of a type of music, it is now completely barren because it is up to each individual's hatred to decide what defines it. So "Emo" can mean effeminate, camp, over-dramatic, over-produced, young, homosexual - whatever you want to hate this morning.

Gawd, the labelling of music is really silly. Except Crap or Not Crap of course!
