Pretty stupid question I know....
Didn't want to jack this thread, so how do you stay warm outside during the winter?
I ask because I'm planning on moving North from Texas sometime next year. The temperatures in that thread were a little surprising.
I just throw a coat on and am usually fine. Now its a hoodie and a coat at the same time and it's perfect.

5fresh clean socks as often as possible. winter boots.
rant: why the hell do people even try to live in chicago without owning a pair of winter boots? it's not like the several big snowfalls each year are a big surprise.

6I'm south of you, so around here it's not a big concern. But last month I was visiting a friend who lives way the fuck up in the mountains in Colorado (his home is at 9500 feet) and it was cold as shit. He, and most everyone around there, had one of these.

It was very good, and my friend said it's the most economical means to heat a home. I had never heard of the things before. But it worked very well.

I saw a young woman on the train the other day wearing a pair of flip flops. No socks. It was on a morning that we got a few inches of snow.
At first I was mad at her...then I figured she must be one of those really poor upper middle class people who doesn't have enough money to properly cover their feet and I felt bad.

9i looked briefly at those wood pellet stoves, but ended up installing a log-burning wood stove. i thought it would be weird having to buy wood pellets from someone to burn.
now my favorite hobby is splitting logs, no joke.

10Three words:
CHINESE
SILK
UNDERWEAR.
Cheap in Pearl River Mart here in NYC, and findable in any Chinatown. Thin, but deceptively so. Thin enough to not make your clothes fit you like a sausage casing, but warm enough that you can walk around in -6c (like it was today) in relative comfort.
