i may be needing to record an upcoming phone conversation, and i keep seeing skype mentioned. anyone have any experience? i'm totally fine with recording using an in-line telephone recorder, so is the only reason skype is recommended b/c it will automatically help you record to mp3? if that's the only advantage, then i don't think i'm interested.

just checking for opinions! thanks!

Skype is handy. I didn't know about the ability to record calls, but now I'll look into that.

I've used it in various ways, but generally have it running on my machines all the time. Nice IM client, and the ability to move from IM to a voice call, to a video call as needed is nice. I use it to make cheap international calls, and I've also used the Skype In service to get a temporary phone number.

Two thumbs up from me FWIW

Skype is great for use on your home/standalone computers, but I'd advise you all not to install it on a LAN network, as it appears to some weird things in that kind of environment...

I once worked at a company where the boss decided we ought to switch to Skype to save on long-distance bills. The IT guy installed it, and immediately afterward discovered it had created new directories and placed some weird files on the network server. Some other network-related programs stopped working and the only way we could fix the situation was to roll back to a System Restore setting from a few days prior.

I'm pretty sure we were running Windows Server 2003 at the time, and the PC that Skype was installed on was running XP with SP2.

Anyway, I've been running Skype at home for years with no problems. It runs great under Linux as well.

I've found Skype to be a real convenient solution since I dropped my regular land-line phone service when I moved into the new apartment. Whenever my cell phone's battery dies, I just open up Skype on the 'puter and make the call.

I assumed the same thing. Sounds like a pain in the ass.

I have a cordless Skype phone, the Netgear SPH200D, and it is my primary phone.

I had some issues with random disconnects on Skype-to-Skype calls. I assigned the unit a static IP, put it in my router's DMZ and all is well.

Looks like Skype Unlimited has been discontinued, with Skype Pro in its place. $3/month is still a damn good deal though.
