Band: HEALTH

Saw these guys tonight, and it was strange. Oddly the first way I'd describe them is that they are "big on the internet." I was surprised to see a lot of younger kids there. You know, dudes in brown plaid sport coats and sideways colorful baseball caps with bills curved up extremely.

Anyway, they were good live. Some really nice loud furious hanging drone stuff. Machine gun drums. None of the mp3's around sound as good though.

This comes close (towards the end):

(edit, oh shit, this video is from CalArts gd it.)

I saw these guys last night in Milwaukee and my jaw was on the floor. Holy fucknuggets.

I had never heard of them before this week, and as they're setting up, a friend turns to me. "So, are you familiar with Health?" "No." "People keep telling me they're totally Boredoms-like, with a little bit of the Liars' last few records."

And then they did exactly that and my jaw hit the floor. Totally pummeling, brain-breaking no-wave. So. Fucking. Rad!

NOT CRAP by a country mile.

Yes! Same here. I love noise bands, but so many of them seem to slack off in that department and structure their compositions by saying, i dunno, "just mash your keyboard for a few minutes and watch me for when we change to stomping on our pedals," or whatever. With Health, it was really apparent that every sound they made was deliberate.

agreed, and that's generally why i hate noise bands. the lack of composition.

making noise is the easiest part of playing music/owning gear. writing something worth hearing is the hard part.

Very true. Writing pop is easy. Writing match rock that is engaging and stimulating like Slint or the Shipping News is hard. Writing good noise is super, ultra fucking hard and well beyond my own personal capability, so I have nothing but tons of respect for those who do it well.

You guys have me salivating so hard over Health that I'm scared I'll actually be disappointed when I hear them.

The thing is with noise, sometimes the artist is more interested in creating a texture or aural environment than he is in writing a discernable composition.

As for Health, I first heard about them here, on some "new bands" thread, but have yet to actually hear them.
