joke right? F1's most accomplished driver of all time is too afraid to run in the 500.

All types of racing have their strengths and weaknesses. F1 can be plagued by inability to pass. As someone mentioned, the split between CART and IRL reduced the talent in the 500 during that period, which made for less interesting races.

seeing open wheels race in close proximity at 220 mph is not boring.

The fact that all the IndyCar Series drivers failed to make a major/successful carreer in F1 says a lot to me (Michael Andretti was the joke of 1993. Jacques Villeneuve won a title, but nothing else in 10 years. And Montoya failed to win the championship). Sure, F1 was way more exciting than today (but much better than the awful Schumacher’s years), but if racing is about speed, this said it all:
"With the FedEx Championship Series making its first visit to the track that had hosted the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix since 1978, there were inevitable comparisons between the world's two major open-wheel categories. Admittedly, it was rather like comparing apples and oranges, but it did represent the first opportunity in over two decades to get some idea of the relative performance of Champ Cars and their F1 cousins. On the face of it, there was no contest. Cristiano da Matta's pole time of 1 m 18.959 s was 6.123 seconds shy of 1999 CART champion Juan Pablo Montoya's stunning pole-winning effort aboard the BMW/Williams at the 2002 GP”

This weekend Monaco GP was better to watch than Indy 500.
