ok, do 1" 8 track machines exist? or are they only in 1/4 and 1/2?

also - considering i dont really know much about tape handling, maintanence, upkeep, etc, do you think it'd be a waste to spend big bucks on a 16 track machine?

if i owned these adats that im working with now, they would have been tied to a rope and thrown overboard 6 months ago. or maybe an oversized paperweight.

im starting to see the low cost is not worth that fucking red blinking light anymore.

If you want to get better at handling of tape and use of tape machines, look for an MX5050 8 track (1/2") tehy go for a few hundred bucks and sound great. try ebay.

I used to use a Tascam 388. It's 1/4 in tape but a great frickin unit...couldnt recomend it enough for starting out. The tape is inexpensive too...like 8 bucks a reel. Those MX5050's look really cool tho...never seen a 1/2 in 8 track before. The cool thing about the 388 is that it has the mix console built in. Get a couple channels of good mic pre's and you can record and mix really nice sounding recordings.

good luck

yes

as mentioned, scully, ampex and studer all made them

and i have one made by mci

it's a good machine. made two records on it. easy to align. sounds really good at either 15 or 30ips.

i'm considering selling it, however, due to limited use and lack of space
