How much do your musical tastes overlap with your SO?

How do you (if at all) rectify differences in musical tastes?

If you’re currently looking for an SO, how important are their musical tastes to you?

If you’re in a band and/or play a musical instrument, does your SO like it and/or support it? Or not?

If you don’t have an SO, theoretical answers are of course acceptable.

Met a few partners through music down the years, but in general I couldn't care less what they listen to. As long as they're not passive where the arts are concerned then I'm fine.

Wife and I definitely have some overlap in our musical tastes; if you drew a Venn diagram, maybe 50% would fall in both circles?

No matter how much I try, I cannot get her to like noisier bands. Mission of Burma, Archers of Loaf, and Jesus Lizard are all out. Won’t even try U.S. Maple. She can and does tolerate (after much insistence) some Pavement and later Silkworm.

Her favorite genres are third-wave ska and 90’s punk. Not the worst, but it does mean I have to listen to a lot of Less Than Jake and blink-182. I have grown to be fond of Skankin’ Pickle.

It is absolutely necessary to have playlists on iTunes with wife-friendly music. Playing my whole library on shuffle in the car or otherwise would result in having to skip roughly 50% of the songs.

Wife and kids, plus my parents, sisters, and other extended family have always been very supportive of my band. I am very fortunate here.

Theoretically, I don’t think I could handle being in a relationship with someone if their favorite genre was modern country.

Never cared about that.

She's not a music listener. I mean, she enjoys classic pop and Rock tunes, and have nice taste for electronic and dance music... but she rarely buys stuff or listen to music the way we freaks do.

She's lovely and hot. Enough.

My wife and I have maybe 30% overlap in taste. She's very tolerant in my car, just can't play Tom Waits or dub mostly.

She has very little interest in my bands which is good and bad. I feel like it gives me a world of my own but it's hard to explain the endless creative drive to someone who isn't creative.

My ex (14 years ago) was pretty into music, we shared some things, had some things independently. She had tastes spanning quite a range and was up for new things, which was fun and stimulating, although I could be an asshole about things of hers I didn't like (as I could be to everyone). Got to know Britta Persson from her, whom remains among my favourites.

I have no idea how I would think about this now, but spontaneously I don't see it being that important - not a dealbreaker or anything. I imagine if I'm into someone they probably have artistic interests - more likely to put them on the same wavelength. But I'm also always prepared to be surprised in that department.

I used to care more but that was when I was a virgin. My girlfriend and I have been together for 30 years; we fell in love to The Pixies, Violent Femmes, Nirvana, Primus, and Crass, so I can't complain.

My wife is into stuff like the Indigo Girls, Lake Street Dive, and Brandi Carlile. I'm a fan of the latter, I didn't know much by her at first, and now we've seen her 4 times together. Otherwise, she likes mostly whatever is on the radio, whether it's oldies, 80s, 90s, or the hits of the day.

She'll go to a show with me if it's a reasonably popular artist that she sort of enjoys. We've seen Beck, Modest Mouse, and The Breeders together. In a week we're seeing Janet Jackson. She was a sport and went with me to see The Jesus Lizard on my birthday, though she doesn't like that kind of music.

Overlapping musical taste isn't a deal breaker. She'll come see me perform when I do open mics.

There's probably about 70% overlap in our tastes. She steers clear of the noise rock, for the most part, but will go to shows with me. Her glasses were broken in the pit during a TJL show a few years ago. She's been to nearly every show I've played since I met her. Sure, she has her guilty pleasures like Justin Timberlake and whatnot, but then again I don't ask her to sit though mine, so it's fine.
