Kanye West on George W. Bush, Hurricane Recovery Efforts...

I know that this got a brief mention in Kanye's C/NC poll, but I thought I'd share a link to this video of Kanye's remarks from this evening's NBC telethon. For those who haven't yet seen it/heard about it, Kanye went "off script" and managed to make number of statements criticizing this disaster's handling (including "George Bush doesn't care about black people") before NBC finally cut away.

I found the site that hosted this clip via Google, and can't vouch for its general content. Among other things that seemed a bit off, they refer to him as "actor Kanye West".

On the interstate where they're "storing" the people they've rescued, Jesse Jackson appeared (with TV camera in tow) and stated "This is the hull of a slave ship!"

I heard that!! So crazy, that man is!

His concern is valid, but that statement affirms my assumption that this man has lost it.

I read over this post quickly and misread.
For a second I was like, wtf is jessica simpson doing?

I hate it when he shows up somewhere. It immediately sandbags the integrity of cause.
I can almost here half the U.S. population sigh, roll their eyes, and care even less about it.
The crisis is so horrible on its own. I don't need him to create a metaphor for me.
I hope heads will actually roll.

I might end up alone in expressing this, but I didn't find KW's remarks to be idiotic.

Unfocused and rambling? Yes, but not idiotic.

While I doubt that it was an entirely un-premeditated or purely spontaneous move on his part to ignore the teleprompter in favor of expressing his own feelings on the matter, I'm still impressed and pleased by his efforts. While his "George Bush doesn't care about black people" remark is likely to be the only thing that the media will latch onto (and is certainly his most "outrageous", "inflammatory" or possibly borderline "idiotic" comment), I felt that his entire scattered minute or so seemed rather sincere. He was clearly pretty worked up and emotional while attempting to express himself in this forum. In fact, a great deal of his speech/tirade/monologue was as inwardly critical as it was outwardly. Calling himself out as a fabulously wealthy entertainer who'd personally continued to spend from his own fortune before actually donating any of it certainly does little to make him "look good". Neither did his admission that he'd been avoiding coverage of the event because it was so unsettling. All he was really expected to do was join in with the other celebrities appearing "concerned". Instead, he essentially used this public opportunity to to express some of the very same points that we posters on the EA board have been hammering away at for days now, including...

*Media bias re: "Finding" v. "Looting"

*Urging people to support The Red Cross

*Bemoaning the lack of resources at hand, due to the Iraq war

*Criticizing the law enforcement's emphasis on property protection over search and rescue

*Calling President George W. Bush out as an individual who shows little or no compassion for so many of the other human beings living in this country

He didn't do it in a "smooth" fashion. It's not "comfortable" to watch. He didn't do a great job of fully articulating every tangent and run-on sentence that he squeezed into his minute or so on national television. But that's forgivable and not idiotic, at least to me, because I know what I sound like when I'm tremendously upset and attempting to express something that matters to me. And I've never winged it in the middle of a live TV broadcast.

I know,
It would have been wonderful had he been able to pull off a well-spoken protest. That was definitely not a "clutch" performance.
No sarcasm.

I don't believe that the relief was purposely stalled because race or class. I believe that the people in charge were/are simply inept. As has been stated before, plenty, there should have been a plan. All concerned has known this possibility.
I am however, more embarrassed by the lack of effort by our citizenship as a whole. After finding out that the levees had broke, we all knew what was to come. We should have acted as fellow citizens. Not wait and see how the government would handle it. Anyone with any ability to help should have plowed into the area with aid independently. No one would stop us. If they did there would be another thing to complain about, but there is no excuse in not trying. We suffer from a "not my problem" disease in our culture. There are stories of people escaping the French Quarter on Tuesday in cars! If they got out, surely people who can help can get in. How many trips did the dozens of news agencies take in and out of the city? Surely others could follow.
Anyone with any capacity to help should have helped!
Every helicopter in the region should have been there in a day. Anyone with a boat, barge, or raft on the Mississippi should have headed south. This is a sinking ship.
It's not my problem.
This is a person about to drown in a pool.
This is a baby walking into the street.
This is a friend trying to commit suicide.
Drop everything, and do something!
The first hours are the most crucial.
You don't wait for the government to tell you where to go. If they do their job then all the better. If they don’t, (which they haven’t) then you have. Of course there is a risk. This was a call to duty as citizens, and not too many people answered.
Our government failed, yes.
Blame Bush. He’s a dick-head. Hopefully a Mayor Bilandic type situation will occur with Bush. That still wont change the fact that people sat by watching this happen to one of the best cities in the union.

I don't give a shit if he said it eloquently or not. He said it. Over the last week Kanye West has been amazing. Only 3 days ago I was watching MTV and he went off on one about hip hop hating gays and how wrong it was. Common sense but it takes some balls.
