Following this rule can make for some ackward introductions.

I think this rule is obsolete. If I were hobnobbing with British nobility, I might wait for hands to be offered before I reached out. But in neo-USA 20x6, I'll meet a woman like I meet a man, with my hand held out. Nice to meet you.

I was just watching a TV show about etiquette. Apprently, the custom of shaking hands originally served to demonstrate that neither party was carrying a weapon.

Better safe than sorry, I guess.

How could that be anything but rude to shake a guy's hand but not a girls? I'd feel immediately uncomfortable and I would then look at you through squinty eyes to show that I think you're "shifty."

That could make you seem like you think women are "dirty".
