"No offense"? Um, that phrase doesn't really seem appropriate in that sentence. Here, let me try:

No offense, but please go fuck yourself.

shellac

well sorry bob, but it did. it blew. i like steady as she goes - the peel version is good. but christ, it aint anything special. oh, and fuck you too.

I've seen them play this song many times, heard it on various live recordings, etc., and I can't think of a single time where there was even any variation in the structure of the song or in how it was played, this DVD included. It sure as fuck isn't a "sloppy" performance or anything. Did you watch it on a "tele" with 1 mono speaker or something? Where do you see evidence that it "blew" on the DVD?

Oddly enough, other people have actually made a point of saying on this message board that they don't like this song at all (I'm sure you could find those posts by using the search engine). I don't get it... If AC/DC would have written and recorded this song in the 70s, people would fucking love it.

You're not one of those guys who sings along with "Prayer to God" at show, are you?

I'll be perfectly honest here, I think the song is great. But this particular performance isn't quite as tight as I was expecting from Shellac. However, I think it is a damn fine performance. I find it to be inspiring and full of energy. I prefer Shellac's raw and exciting execution over the very polished and seemingly uninspired Wilco number (minus the guitar solo which is killer).

And one very important thing to remember is that Bob, the bass player of Shellac, was also the recording engineer of the project. I can only imagine how stressful and difficult it is to record that many bands in one day. I cannot imagine how stressful and difficult it would be to record that many bands especially when one is Tortoise and another is Wilco (this from a technical standpoint), in one day. I simply cannot fathom doing it all in one day AND having to perform with your rock band. Much respek.

no offence guys, but the first page of this thread is a classic. i don't like to diss anyone, but i think it should be displayed together with all the crap one is required to read, but no-one ever does, during registration (terms or service, or whatever it is called). i apologize, but i am not kidding.

and i'm sorry but i like both the peel session and burn to shine versions of steady as she goes.

for some reason, i feel very apologetic. i do apologize about that.

You know, I promised myself that if you replied to my post I wasn't going to reply to you. Web forum arguments are so boring. Anyways:

1. I honestly don't care what you think about the performance. What I was commenting on was how absurd it is to preface a negative and offensive opinion with the "no offense" disclaimer. If you feel the need to slag somebody (and offend them), don't bother saying "no offense". Of course there's offense. That's the point.

2. Didn't your mother ever teach you that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything?

Okay. I'm done here. I promise to not reply further.

NO JOKE! I think it's truly amazing considering the time constraints...and I think it adds to it's charm. I can only imagine what a pain in the ass something like that must be to do. Yes, much respect! Turned out great in my opinion.

Sounds alright to me, man. Certainly doesn't seem much different to the Peel session.

The fact of being at a live show is going to make a difference, to you and to the band, surely. To give it the judgement you have just seems overly pernickety to me. A comment made to your fellow friend on the couch, maybe: "this was better at the gig..." Fair enough, people do this. To come on here and say that it really blows just seems typical spoilt American scenestering to me. Which blows.
