Drugs: Antidepressants

I was always, always against the idea of these because I was one of those stubborn "People need to solve their own problems and not take drugs to help block them out" type of people... Now I'm not so sure. Some people seem to just be slightly unbalanced. I've never tried them so I'm not going to vote. Just curious.

i was the same way for the longest time, and i was really reluctant to use them, but they actually helped, didnt make me spaced out or less creative or fake-happy, i just didnt let the dumb shit get to me. i had some serious internal problems for about a year and it got to the point where i was like "ok, i dont want to live like this, and i can't see me helping myself, so lets try this for a while." i was on it for 3 or 4 months and then weaned myself off, ive been fine ever since.

crap when taken for superficial reasons
crap for the EPS (extra periphiral symptoms, i think? my friend has serious facial ticks as a result, but was on serious shit.)
crap for delaying ejaculation (i know this sounds awsome, but seriously, 4 hours to rub one out? terrible)
not crap for what its supposed to do.

Wellbutrin doesn't have the sexual side effects of the SSRI group of anti-depressants (Zoloft, Prozac, etc.).

If used to medicate kids through adolescence: CRAP (though I would give a kidney to be in a coma rather than be in a high school cafeteria again).

I have friends with recurrent major depression; you can't will yourself out of it. They aren't the only treatment method, but I vote NOT CRAP for anti-depressants.

Yes, obviously they’re over-prescribed, but I’ve definitely seen how effective they can be for people.

Not Crap.

The trial and error element of taking anti-depressants is crap. The application is so wishy washy, and ultimately, no one has any idea of how your body, and mind, is going to react..

"Take two of these a day. Come back next week."

"You have hives and pink eye? "

"Cold sweats? Hallucinating? Shitting Blood? Try 3 of these."

"Growing a horn and chainsaw arms?"

The list of pontential side effects for these drugs is just ridiculous. I once had one that simply said:

"Death"

Honestly.

A conspriacy nut once told me a tale regarding the pharmacuetical companies having and supressing the knowlege of how to test one's levels of seratonin/dopeamine/nor adrenaline. Probably total bullshit, but there's got to be an easier way.

Not Crap for saving people's lives. WF 7 for the above and the ever increasing ubiquity.

My ex was clinically depressed (and still is, naturally). Whenever she went off the meds she was fucking nuts. When she was on them, she was much much less fucking nuts.

Most of the bias against antidepressants comes from A) misinformation and B) dipshit doctors overprescribing them because of drug company pressure or from being lazy and not really wanting to properly help someone.

For instance, i've heard people say that they don't want to use antidepressants because they don't want to lose the "highs" along with losing the "lows." They hear somewhere that antidepressants just level you off and shut down your emotions. This is complete bullshit. There are many different drugs with many different effects, and once you find the one that works for your specific chemistry (if you ARE, in fact, clinically depressed, manic depressed, bipolar, etc.), this does not happen.

Your brain is an organ, just like your heart, kidney, anything else. The only difference is that the brain affects how you think. If your kidney is broken and a medicine will fix it, you'd take it, right? You wouldn't say "i need to be strong and figure this out on my own," you'd take the fucking medicine. Why some people don't get that the brain can be broken just like any other organ in the body is something i'll never understand.

Antidepressants are NOT CRAP. Believe you me.

(I'm kinda hoping my next relationship is with someone who doesn't need them, though. *sheepish face*)

I've been depressed on and off for most of my adult life, but I don't think it's something I need all the time. About a year ago I went through a major depression and started taking paxil. It helped at first, especially with the anxiety, but I drank heavily while I used it so I don't think it worked properly. I stopped taking it about two months ago, stopped drinking too, and I feel better, but I'm wasting huge amounts of time just for the sake of passing the time. I've binged on reality TV and started eating my ass off. Luckily, my metabolism can withstand it.

So, I'm not exactly making the most of life. I vote NOT CRAP, though. It might not be for me, but it's helped a lot of people I know. They probably should be used with therapy (I tried that, but didn't feel it was useful), and definitely not with alcohol.
