My ex was clinically depressed (and still is, naturally). Whenever she went off the meds she was fucking nuts. When she was on them, she was much much less fucking nuts.
Most of the bias against antidepressants comes from A) misinformation and B) dipshit doctors overprescribing them because of drug company pressure or from being lazy and not really wanting to properly help someone.
For instance, i've heard people say that they don't want to use antidepressants because they don't want to lose the "highs" along with losing the "lows." They hear somewhere that antidepressants just level you off and shut down your emotions. This is complete bullshit. There are many different drugs with many different effects, and once you find the one that works for your specific chemistry (if you ARE, in fact, clinically depressed, manic depressed, bipolar, etc.), this does not happen.
Your brain is an organ, just like your heart, kidney, anything else. The only difference is that the brain affects how you think. If your kidney is broken and a medicine will fix it, you'd take it, right? You wouldn't say "i need to be strong and figure this out on my own," you'd take the fucking medicine. Why some people don't get that the brain can be broken just like any other organ in the body is something i'll never understand.
Antidepressants are NOT CRAP. Believe you me.
(I'm kinda hoping my next relationship is with someone who doesn't need them, though. *sheepish face*)
