While I don't dispute that the Edge's playing is overrated, he does not fit in the same paradigm as most of the rest of the overrated guitarists. That is, he's not a power-chording, pentatonic blues scale-type regular rock player. He actually exhibits some own style.
It pains me to say it, but I don't think the Edge (except for his dubious stage name) is the real reason we all hate U2 so much.
If there were no Bono, and Edge, Mullen, and Clayton had been a trio that concentrated on their more off-beat rock side, well... it would be a lot harder to hate U2 with such vitriol.
