Also: Joe Girardi? WTF?!?
Vockins, how come you haven't stormed Steinbrenner's office yet?
Because he knows those are both good moves. The Yankees need a lot more than ARod to compete and letting him go gives them the flexibility to make it happen. It is time to turn that team over and inject some youth into that lineup. With Chamberlain, Cabrera, Kennedy, Cano and Hughes, they are off to a good start. Girardi seems like the kind of Manager to get the most out of them.
I would have rather had ARod play third next year than anyone. And the year after that. And the year after that one.
That said, if the dude doesn't want to play for the Yankees, and he obviously doesn't, I don't want him to either. The extension he was offered was serious money for a long time if the reports are accurate. ARod never called back. Dude was walking from the get go.
Considering that dumping Tom Gordon turned into Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain, I'm OK with draft picks and Betemit at third.
I think Girardi will be a superior in game manager than Torre and far more likely play younger players. He will also probably be much worse with Tampa management and the media, which might be a more important skill than in game management with this particular team.
If it was up to me, I'd be playing for 2009 and 2010 with this team. 2008 is a write off unless Kennedy and Hughes turn into Johnson/Schilling.
