Are you talking about
Gates of Fire or Branford's history?
heh - i'm talking about herodotus. I've read his 'Histories' more than any other book. Some people call him 'The Father of Lies' and really, really hate him for not being accurate, telling forlktales, etc... I guess it's lucky that I really, really love beautiful lies.
I've also been reading a lot of Roberto Calasso's books, 'The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony,' 'The Ruin of Kasch'... Incredibly dense and difficult but also incredibly rewarding.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
