Death was a cheesy metal band that canceled out their own genre when the loser turned into a Christian. I don't care what "limits" he pushed or how progressive he was, that's lame. I'll take some sleazy sloppy album like Incantation's Onward to Golgotha over that over rated crap anyday.

They very well may have invented the Death Metal genre, but musically, I'd consider them a thrash band. A really fucking great thrash band at that.

Groovy riffs, excellent musicianship, solid albums with an constantly changing line-up... what more could you want in a metal band? Wasn't all 80s metal cheesy in some way? Big deal. I love it.

What was cheesy; the gore, or the introspective, though melodramatic lyrics? Who on earth gives a flying fuck about metal lyrics? At best, they just contribute a better vocal delivery.

Musically, no one touched them, save for maybe Atheist, and Cynic, except they were either sloppier, or were too distracted with their guitar synths. Schuldiner could write a damn good song, and that's saying a lot for most metal where there's only three distinct songs on each album. I'd go as far as saying all of Schuldiner albums were great. It's the music that matters, right? [/metal nerd]

I just think Chris Reifert was smart to leave Death and start Autopsy. Listen to Mental Funeral loud and if you can't tell the difference, there is no more hope for you. I like my metal rowdy and Death failed. Hell a christian band like Trouble put them to shame. Any metal that had a touch of punk in it and avoided the Rush influence like Atheist, Cynic, Death, whomever gay were usually way better.

No, I agree with you that Reifert was smart to leave. I like Autopsy, but it doesn't compare to Death for me. I like the direction Death went in after SBG. I like Bill Andrews who came in after Reifert, or the immature guy on Howard Stern's show.

There aren't too many memorable death metal bands around today, I'd much rather listen to noisy as hell bands like Eyehategod over "brutal" ones. As limiting as death metal became, I think Death was something special. If you're into prog metal, anyway.

Not Crap, waffles for shitty lyrics though I suppose the lyrics are fine next to a lot of other metal bands but seriously for fucks' sake are they even trying? I guess not.
