I watched a good portion of the HBO marathon last night. It served as a good refresher.

I think Carlin was far better in the 70s and early 80s. Some say he was “tamer,” but I would disagree. Most of his best bits—the ones he would do until he died—came from this period (a place for all my stuff, the seven dirty words).

As he became older and very biter, he also became less funny and original.

He did some god awful crap, too. His failed sit-com comes to mind. And he was in a lot of bad movies, acting badly.

Yes, as much as I loved the early stuff (for me), the later stuff really was just too bitter and too misanthropic. The earlier stuff was colored more with a sort of a "disappointed idealism" (his words), but if it truly were so idealistic, it wouldn't have gotten too bitter. I suppose as pop culture got naughtier, he had to get dirtier to stay ahead of the curve.

Weak comic. Probably had some good stuff at the beginning, but quickly began to believe he was far more controversial than he actually was. I think he's no funnier than Robin Williams, which is not very funny at all. So what if he swore?!?

The only waffle factor (2) comes from speaking ill of the dead so soon...
