Comic: George Carlin

One of my favorite records period is Occupation: Foole. My father had a copy on vinyl, and it was a record cover that would frighten me when I was lil.

Somewhere around 6th grade, I actually started listening to it and would stay up late wondering if the early 1970's really smelled like that record cover did.

I much prefer the hippy-through 80's material, which was far more reserved, smooth and wordy. He had a knack for making off kilter examples of dialog to fill his jokes in perfectly. There was a quality then to his voice, and cadence that was entertaining... many comedians miss the fact that in essence, they are performing with their voices, and the often rough shod delivery, even of good material, can ruin the whole set. George Carlin was at times NPR quality, as far as delivery goes.

Still, he did slide into that angry old man period, which was not at all razor sharp, just sort of angry.

I say Not Crap.
