I've long believed that theft is not a crime in rock and roll, or pop music in general. If pieces of something else makes something new and vital, then so be it. There are so many examples of a lifted riff, groove, vocal melody that it's fun to point them out. The formula being this song ____ is based on ____ that song.
One example I hadn't noticed until someone else pointed out recently is that this (and a couple others of theirs):
Is based on this:
Re: This song is kind of based on that song
2And most people on here probably know this one:
Borrowed heavily from this one:
Right down to the chorus pedal, but with a pretty different mood to it.

3The come as you are/eighties thing even reaches back in time to a Damned song, can't remember the name.
Re: This song is kind of based on that song
4Yeah, the one on Strawberries. It's interesting because the overall mood of the Damned song is closer, but the chorus effect and the actual notes of the KJ song is more like the Nirvana riff. In fact, I think KJ couldn't be accused as borrowing as much from the Damned, as Nirvana did from them.Vibracobra wrote: Mon May 30, 2022 7:18 am The come as you are/eighties thing even reaches back in time to a Damned song, can't remember the name.

5The whole Elastica 'plagiarizing' Wire thing, though getting sued over "reminds me of.." sets kind of a weird precedent.

6I've always detected a kinship between these two
Erstwhile FM Dr. Venkman/Houlihan once texted me that he found a striking similarity between "Christmas at the Zoo" and a country tune that I'm just having the dickens of a time recalling the name. It was a blatant ripoff, actually. Love old Lips, but they did a whole lot of stealin'.

Justice for Dexter Wade and Nakari Campbell

8This is an odd thing because Chrome's album was recorded before QOTSA, but released ten years after the QOTSA song. Although with such heavy drug use involved by both bands at the time of recording, a wormhole might have been involved.
Also, I think maybe the later Disappears and all of Facs is based on this Chrome song:

9Nomeanso's "Real Love" and Rush's "Working Man." Both Canadian, too.

10The next time "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" comes on the radio?
Start singing the verses to "Hot Legs" when the verse kicks in.
While Rod was smart enough to cut the first couple of lines in roughly half?
Yeah...
