The second verse of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" is up there for me, too.

I'm sensing a theme in the songs that tear my heart out — comes from a long life of loving one person and the family we've made together.

"Everybody's Been Burned" by The Byrds.

My initial answer was 'A Sadness Song' by Current 93, but after a brief reflection, the correct answer is 'Tecumseh Valley' by Townes Van Zandt. (Though 'St John the Gambler' comes very, very close.)

'Tecumseh Valley' is a devastating song.

I personally find a lot of Leonard Cohen both really sad but also funny, which is sorta how I do sad in real life so that makes sense.

This and Nothin’ (mentioned earlier) are both great. I usually think of “Marie” when I think of his saddest songs, but admittedly it’s in some ways a bleaker version of “Tecumseh Valley”.
