Re: Significant Others and musical tastes

Watching your house shrink away in my rear-view mirror
As I drive away
Wishing that I could take back all those words
That meant nothing that I didn't say
I'm trying
To be what you want me to be
But it's so damn hard to keep playing the part
Of the fool, week after week
I think you need some time alone (I think you need some time alone)
You say you want someone to call your own
Open your eyes, you can suck in your pride
You can live your life all on your own
Is this all going to be just another time
That we play this game?
I've tried to convince you that things could be different
But somehow they end up the same
But what did you expect from me?
What am I supposed to do?
You say that you're starting to feel like you're getting lost
Well, I do too
I don't want to live this lie again (I don't want to live this lie again)
I know I'll get it right but I don't know when
I'll open my eyes, I've got something inside
I'll just masturbate in my room until then
It's never over until it's done
And I don't think that you're the one
It's never over until it's done
And I don't think that you're the one
It's never over until it's done
And I don't think that you're the one
It's never over until it's done
And I don't think that you're the one

We're old enough that we unironically made mix tapes and CDs for each-other when we were courting. And we're both snobs, which is a bit difficult, but she used to be cooler than me.
Similar backstory here. Music's not as big of a focus as it once was, though we have been meaning to do a DJ set together.

Yeah, I was gonna edit my post to say the same thing but might as well piggyback here. It's a bummer that she won't go to shows you want to see but things aren't always going to be 'even'. Besides, we've all seen bad shows before and what's another. "Pride"? No one's keeping score.

(I've actually seen them before, at the Warped Tour no less, and they were indeed terrible)

Yeah, I mean Blink-182 is the kind of self-flagellation not all men would be capable of. I refuse to even ponder an impasse of this magnitude, but it seems the universe has handed you this particular trial of faith. Angels have literally saved Mark Hoppus from lymphoma and Travis Barker from the hellish inferno of an Learjet crash to force your hand.

We find lots of things to do together, but as far music goes we tend to like different things, and it's pretty rare for us to go to something together. That's what movies are for. We do "Divide and Conquer" a ton to make sure we each get time to do stuff that's important to us. She took the kids this weekend so I could go down to NYC for a show, will be taking them again next month when we spend a few days recording, and she also takes frequent friend and work trips that fill her tank.

Going to stuff alone has forced me to make new non-parent friends into my 40s, which is otherwise hard.

With all that said, if she has indicated to her that it's important to her for you to go, and if you can afford it, you should go (and if you go, be fun, don't sit around all night resenting it.) If she just wants to go and doesn't care if you go, buy her a ticket and tell her to have a good time while you have a fun night with the kids. Plan something else (dinner and a movie is a classic date for a reason) and connect that way.

A thing of beauty. Salut!
