35Things I like about Detroit (and surrounding areas):
1. Greektown Casino and the Pegasus restaurant
2. Joe Louis Arena
3. the Joe Louis statue (giant bronze fist)
4. the downtown architecture
5. Car City Records (thanks bill & jessica for telling me about this place)
6. Windsor and Casino Windsor and downtown Windsor w/ it's underage drinking crowd. Fun to watch.
7. The Windsor riverfront. Much nicer than the Detroit riverfront.
8. The Detroit Sunday Market
9. Big Beaver Road
10. The Cider Mill near Birmingham (can't remember the name)
11. Although I wish I could have gone to a game at the old Tiger stadium, I do like the new one. It's a bit on the cheesy side, but I still like it.
12. The amazing amount of great ice rinks you can visit.
13. The beautiful italian girls.
Things I dislike about Detroit (and surrounding areas):
1. The stupid no left turn, make a right, then a U-turn, to make a left, or go straight, then make a U-turn, then a right to turn left bullshit.
2. The special brand of rednecks that live there. They all have giant american made cars, drive a million miles an hour on their every-street-is-a-highway road system. And are too cocky for their own good.
3. The distinct difference between classes, political affiliation, and the deeply imbedded racisim, etc.
4. How the majority of people live in the suburbs and neglect their downtown.
5. Public transportation is terrible and non-existent. People Mover is a joke.
6. Royal Oak, while it can be an experience, is mostly a joke, full of really lame people with too much attitude for their own good.
7. Birmingham is nice and quaint, but full of rich yuppies.
8. The music scene. Unfortunately, Detroit is still stuck in the late 80's / early 90's mainstream when it comes to music. While this has the benefit of being able to find an AC/DC song on the radio at almost any time, the rest of it (except a few notable exceptions) is just CRAP.
Anytime people simply scoff at and easily dismiss Detroit, I know how they feel, but now realize that they don't know what they are talking about. It's like me saying that Toledo is a shithole. It may very well be true, but it's probably not so bad.
Detroit has an amazing history and has so much potential to be a great city, and I have a feeling that it might be a great city once again in about 50 or 100 years.
For now, it's OK. It's not as great as Chicago for sure, but it's beauty won't be found on the surface.

you can't blame detroit for this one. commonly referred to as a 'michigan turn,' this is precedent throughout the state.

Either way, it's stupid.

38Russ you seem to be contradicting yourself with your 'list' of thoughts - likes and dislikes.
Of course you’re entitled to your opinions, however, it'd be believable if they made more sense.
Waving such heavy remarks around needs some heavy “fact-backingâ€

I'll admit there seems to be a speeding issue within the area…
This is "Motor City"... but hey, no excuses.
Really though, this couldn't occur in "every city" in the country? Only Detroit right.
