I haven't checked your Discogs page in a minute. Will do so now.
Oh… we can all be Discogs friends, and judge each other’s musical choices!

I’m gramsci2000 be my friend. Zuck tells me I have a demand side of about 11 more.
LOL, I haven't thought about listing haves and wants on Discogs. I just use it to buy records.

How can you be selling Ride, Nowhere! Unless you brought the clear blue reissue…
Multiple copies, various pressings, &c. I'm keeping one LP, and I'm selling all of CDs.

Supporting artists via Bandcamp is great, but supporting brick-and-mortar retail is important, too, especially if you (like may) only have a small selection of retail record stores.
yeah, I still visit my local brick and mortar record store just because I still want one to still exist in my neighborhood.
I'm fine with buying used LPs and reissues without the DL codes. But for new releases, i wish the band or label would make it easy to get a DL of a new release by having the buyer use the receipt as proof of purchase, without having to go through the expense of printing a DL card.

Totally agree. Teacher's Pet's point that it costs labels is correct; a few years ago I asked the owner of a fairly well-known indie label why they don't include download codes anymore and he said almost no one was using them, so it was a waste on their end.

As far as collection rules, I alphabetize all, multiples by the same artist chronologically from oldest-newest. A lot of offshoots get sorted chronologically with their main band (ex: Robert Pollard solo goes with the GBV). I put plastic outers on new stuff to keep it nice, or used stuff that's not already trashed. If it's older, not expensive and the jacket's already beat, then I don't bother, unless the spine is really trashed on some rare-ish thing and I don't want to wreck it further by having the LP in it. Replace inners as needed with new paper sleeves. I hate plastic inners. All LPs housed in wooden crates my dad helped me make. 7"s are in plain white cardboard boxes from Bags Unlimited.

I clean everything incoming with distilled water and cotton rounds (Swisspers....used to use generic ones from the grocery store, but the Swisspers tend to not leave bits of cotton in the grooves).

I catalog my collection on discogs, which comes in handy when I know I have something but not sure if the copy I'm looking at somewhere is a condition upgrade (especially with 45s). I'm currently at around 2k LPs and 4k 45s. This is more a cry for help than a brag. I do a local radio show that's all vinyl, and it's become an excuse to continue the accumulation. Really had to put my foot down on myself lately to stop buying shit cuz "Oooo, that got reissued, I want it!". Being more picky about "how many times will you actually listen to this?".

I thought we were worried about the end of physical media, now I have to be worried about the end of digital media. Sheesh!
It is annoying, at least for those that care about the downloads, that the use of Bandcamp is incentivized. In addition to the free download, they also offer unlimited streaming of the album through their site, so cover all the bases. Honestly my favorite digital companion was the CD in the Shellac 1000 hurts.

Interestingly I brought the about to be released new Casper Brotzmann Massaker record at his show last night and it came with a CD like old Shellac records.

Reading through this makes me realize I need to finally either make a spreadsheet or use discogs to keep the collection organized. We have about 1200-1500 LPs, and about 250 45s (sold off a bunch of these).

Ugh it feels like such an undertaking, but I very often find myself buying a record I already have (or have 2 or 3 of already) and that can get annoying.

Yeah, the spreadsheet I keep is useful for several reasons. It does make it a lot easier to keep track of records I acquired but forgot about or haven't listened to in a long time. Especially helpful when I only have one record by an artist.

I started keeping the spreadsheet when my collection was only at 150 or so. I can imagine creating one after already amassing a collection over 1000+ records would take quite a bit of time.

Somewhat casually.

LPs (maybe a thousand? more? I honestly never counted) on some crap IKEA shelves I acquired from a neighbor more than a decade ago. Some in plastic sleeves, but most not.

Cats in the house, so not exactly a dust-free nerd environment—but records are for playing and life is for living, you know?

Still, I've been told that most of my stuff is in decent shape.

A few doubles and castoffs live inside some cabinets where I also store toilet paper, unopened olive oil, and pasta. It's a small apartment, so gotta be creative w/space.

Several hundred 7"s are in heavy-duty fancy shoeboxes (acquired from MrsEaster's nattiest coworker) high on the shelf in the living room closet. Those mostly have plastic sleeves.

How is it? I bought that Bass Totem LP (which also came w/a CD) in the fall. It's ok as sound art, but nothing like the '80s and '90s material. New album is just a live track, right?

Sadly, I don't anymore. I had more than 250 vinyl and I gave them all away before I moved before my divorce, to my ex drummer and my friend. I don't feel like starting again... Should I!?
